My BF calls a couple of woodpeckers that attack part of the roof Knothead and Splinter! Ha! Love it When reading this comic I remember being amazed that Woody had a nephew and niece--not just because it meant that Woody had relatives (and here I'd thought he was sui generis )--but because I don't think those two appeared in the TV cartoon series I'd been watching. So they were brand new characters to me. But I really liked the idea that the comics Woody--unlike the cartoon version-- had a supporting cast. It gave the comics Woody series a kind of gravitas in my eyes. Also, since in this comic Woody always addressed them together and never individually, I figured Knothead was the niece because she had her "hair" tied in a knot (i.e., tied with a ribbon that was knotted). I was shocked, shocked to discover sometime later on that Splinter was the girl and Knothead was the boy.

I can't mess with linking to images, and can't remember with 100% certainty what they were, but the earliest 'regular sized' comics I remember seeing (in 'comic packs') were DC Comics Presents # 1 (possibly in the same bag with Superman # 325). My first Marvel seems to have been Captain America # 223. As for my first 'other publisher comic'...no clue, possibly one of the 'Modern Comics' reprints of '60s and earlier-70s Charlton issues, which came and went quickly in the late '70s. As for tabloid-sized comics...by on-sale date, it may have been 'Superman vs. Muhammad Ali'...but I have vague memories of getting it in a department store, so I have no idea how long it had been available. I also had a Marvel 'Laff-a-Lympics' tabloid, although I think it probably came out after that Captain America issue. And I had a tabloid-sized reprint(apparently by Western Publishing) of 'King Kong', dramatizing the movie, which had apparently first been issued sometime in the '60s, byt was kept in print for years.

Hmm. My answer depends on whether you count Epic as part of Marvel or not. It's published by Marvel, so I'd consider Epic a Marvel, like I'd consider a Vertigo a DC, or Helix or Piranha Press
