Man, I just got home today and saw this after not being online for 2 days. What a bummer. She was one of the greats and her legacy will definitely live on.

Bill Sienkiewicz offered a tribute and a caricature on his Facebook page:

That's a great portrait! She drew the first Marvel comic I remember reading: (Yes I know it's a reprint.)

She will be missed. Anytime a fill-in popped up from her you knew that you were seeing something very special since she wasn't doing any monthly gigs. Her artwork was always a welcome breath of freshness in any series. And her "cartooning" was truly spectacular while her caricatures were spot on.

I'd almost forgotten about this... when I was around 10 years old, I thought I had pretty good handwriting and wrote to Marvel asking what it took to be a letterer. I got a letter back from Marie Severin. She told me what kinds of pens, nibs and ink to practice with. I tried it briefly, but never felt comfortable with it. I'm pretty sure the letter was lost; I haven't seen it in 50 years.

Given how short it is, that's a really good piece - however, I wonder if I'm the only guy who flinched a bit when the guy said Stan Lee's wasn't the only "hand drawing our superheroes."

This just shows how many non-comic fans are true nimrods & idiots when it comes to even knowing anything about comics. Stan was never an artist, just a writer. Comics are a collaborative medium in every way, shape, and form. If not for great artists like the late Steve Ditko, Marie Severin, Jack Kirby, etc. Marvel's iconic Silver Age would never have occurred.

One of my favourites. I wish she had been given more series to work on as regular artist, because the few on which she did have a sustained run as penciller weren't just good, they were outstanding. Remarkable versatility, turning in masterful work on everything from the humour and parody of Not Brand Ecch to sword & sorcery of Kull to the wild, other-dimensional fantasy of Dr. Strange, not to mention her inking and general production work on ads, covers, etc. Her work on Kull was a big reason that character would become my favourite REH creation.
