Amazing Spider-Man #5.Written by Nick Spencer. Art and Cover by Ryan Ottley. So Spencer's first arc started with a bang and ends with a whimper. Spidey and Peter are "re-united" thru comic book science. This arc felt great at the beginning but ran out of steam at the end. This issue just felt bland. All the things that I liked in the first few issues weren't in this issue. However Ottley's art does elevate this book. 6/10.

Superman #3.Written by Brian Michael Bendis. Art by Ivan Reis and Joe Prado. The good: Bendis writes the character of Superman perfectly. So many small moments like when he stops the looters make me happy reading about Superman again. Addressing why the JLA isn't able to help Superman. The Adam Strange cameo. And Reis' art is just beautiful. The bad: A bland boring generic villain. And I'm just not feeling the story of Earth being in the Phantom Zone. 5/10.

Fantastic Four #2.Written by Dan Slott. Art by Sara Pichelli. In this issue we find out what Reed, Sue and the Future Foundation have been doing since they disappeared. By the end of the issue we see the last few pages of #1 again but this time from Reed & Sue's viewpoint. And finally by the last page the FF are together again. Slott seems to have a good handle on the individual characters. I hope he can translate those qualities into a great dynamic when they are a team. I like the threat that brings the FF back together again. Overall the story was decent but a bit repetitive. And while Pichelli is a good artist I am not sure I like her style on this title. And Slott needs to address Ben & Johnny's feelings in the aftermath. 6/10.

Plastic Man #4.Written by Gail Simone. Art by Adriana Melo. Melo's art is great but Simone's script veers in a slightly different direction. This issue felt like Simone took a 4 part series and extended it to fill out 6 issues. This issue just felt off. So far issues #1 & #2 were great and #3 & #4 were boring. 4/10.

Daredevil #608.Written by Charles Soule. Art and Cover by Phil Noto. Matt makes peace with his "brother" Mike. Mike has become "real" thru goofy comic book science. And instead of Matt having Mike return to limbo he lets him stay "alive". Mixed feelings about this arc. Having Mike around changes the dynamic of the title. Whether that will be good or bad remains to be seen. 6/10.

Flash #54.Written by Joshua Williamson. Art by Christian Duce. It looks like Williamson has dealt with the Strength Force and will move on to the other forces next issue. All the elements that I enjoyed from the first 50 issues are gone so I think this issue will be my last for now. 3/10.

Captain America #3.Written by Ta-Nehisi Coates. Art by Leinil Francis Yu. Cap and Black Panther team up to shut down all the Nuke soldiers. Coates writes the voice of Steve well. However I'm starting to see a pattern with Coates' pacing. It feels like this story is uneven. The pacing goes either too fast or too slow. Yu's art is great. 7/10.

Adventures of the Super Sons #2.Written by Peter J. Tomasi. Art by Carlo Barberi and Art Thibert. Another fun issue as the Super Sons fight the Gang. I like Tomasi's origin of the Gang and Joker Jr's separate origin. I also like Barberi's style. It complements the script perfectly. I am so happy DC kept this series going. 8/10.

Project: Superpowers #2. Written by Rob Williams. Art by Sergio Davila. Oh yeah. Williams takes the ideas from the first two volumes, reunites some of the team, and puts a new twist on the original idea that caused the heroes to disappear for decades. I won't spoil the last page but Williams just took this title from good to great. Hopefully he will maintain the momentum. I like that Williams is focusing on a handful of characters instead of throwing everyone into the book. 8/10.

And I know some of these titles came out last week but I was away on vacation last week so I had two weeks worth of titles to read. So I threw them all on this week's reviews.

House of Whispers #1Written by Nalo Hopkinson Art by Domonike Stanton Summary: When they sleep the souls of the Voodoo followers travel to the houseboat of Erzulie but all is not well on this evening! Plot: “House of Whispers” is the second series to launch under the new ‘Sandman Universe’ line, and is the title I was most intrigued by because it seemed so different than the others as it dealt with all new characters, and a mythology that I know almost nothing about which always makes for a fantastic adventure and in that regard it did not disappoint. In just a few pages the audience is introduced to a folklore it may not be accustomed to, brand new characters with complex personalities and motivations, action happening across multiple dimensions and a conclusion that both connects it to more familiar ground in the Dreaming but also begs a lot of new questions. While it can feel a bit overwhelming at first, it is so well constructed and layered that it invites further exploration and I'm truly excited to see what wonders lie in store in the next issue. Art: While Stanon's back grounds are lush with exquisite detail and his character designs are fantastic not everything is perfect on the art front here. Given how busy each page and even the individual panels are, “House of Whispers” sometimes fails to provide a clear path for reader’s eyes to follow which occasionally impedes the flow of the narrative. On top of that there are a few places where depth becomes an issue, which creates some confusion in discerning certain actions. There was one panel in particular that I had to read several times to figure out; in it Erzulie points to one character while Uncle Monday is chowing down on some prawns in the back ground...only the way he's drawn it appears that his face is on the same plane as Erzulie's hand making the crunching sound effect of him eating seem like the sound of him being slapped. It made me wonder why is she hitting him? It made no sense plot wise and had me spending time contemplating what was in fact an inconsequential hand gesture. Hopefully as we move out of the chaos of the house party scenes like that won't be repeated. Grade: 8/10

Captain America #3.Written by Ta-Nehisi Coates. Art by Leinil Francis Yu. Cap and Black Panther team up to shut down all the Nuke soldiers. Coates has the voice of Steve written well. I'm starting to see a pattern with Coates' pacing. It feels like this story is uneven. The pacing goes either too fast or too slow. Yu's art is great. 7/10. I had a conversation with the owner of this awesome little comic book shop in Nyack, NY about Coates, and the pacing of Coates' stories was one of his two major issues (the other was that, in Black Panther, he didn't feel there was enough "superhero" action, being far more focused on political intrigue and smaller character moments, and his fear was that this title would go in that direction as well).

Hawkman #4 - Loving the history lesson that V-Ditti is providing here as Carter encounters his previous lives. The references he made to Katar being manipulated by Byth into killing his father, I take it that is from Truman's Hawkworld run? Either way, wonderful art, suspenseful mystery (the Deathbringers??!) terrific title. 8/10
Superman #3 - Superman's scenes were great especially with the looters. I love how the the threat against Earth keeps rising, from atmospheric pollution to the planet itself heaving with the JL close to being overwhelmed by these emergencies. Although still unclear as to the source of this predicament (STAR Labs did something they weren't supposed to??) I get y'all's complaints over Zaar being a generic villain but I liked his interaction with Jax-Ur here in raising an army against Kal & Earth. Reis provided some great action scenes in those moments. 7/10
Supergirl #22 - However, here's where I think Zaar can get some needed development. Kara's trip to Mogo to learn what the GLC may be hiding about Krypton's destruction doesn't go quite to plan. New questions surrounding Zaar's axe, the inner monologue captions for Kara were great, Krypto to the rescue!, and Kara's S-stealth suit was sweet. Maquire's art was great (especially facial expressions). Kara gets her big first tip of the iceberg clue about this cosmic conspiracy at the end and I think, the more she learns here about Zaar's role and background in this attack, the better off his overall character may develop beyond being merely generic. 8/10
Fantastic Four #2 - I love Slott's characterization here as he focuses on what Reed, Sue and the Future Foundation has been doing all this time. Wit, humor, excitement, Valeria picking up on her mom's fixation for Namor-type guys, it was all fun and games until a new cosmic menace comes a-calling that seeks to undo everything that they had accomplished throughout the multiverse. Learning the reason behind Reed's distress call from last issue, spiced up by his twist as revealed on this last page, it's game on now. I'm growing to really like Pichelli's art and style. 8/10

Astonishing X-Men 15 by Rosenberg, Land, Edwards, and D'Armata: Just when Havok thinks he's getting his team together, something is revealed that drives them further apart. Throw in the conflict with the Reavers and O.N.E. and you have a very interesting issue. I love the interaction between the characters and the humor. Colossus is at the point of not really caring about anything, Dazzler is a bit of joke as her tour is not well received. Banshee is really out of it. Beast is his usual self and Warpath is there to watch over these folks per Kitty Pryde. It's as if almost of all them need each other at this point--and to me that's what an X-Men title should be about. There is lots of conversation in this issue (and a really nice one between Havok and Warpath at a super villain bar), however it shows how the characters relate to each other and doesn't seem to just fill the pages. Dazzler is quickly becoming my favorite (and I am rooting for a Colossus/Dazzler romance). This is an excellent team book. The art was split between Land and Edward and it was pretty solid throughout. Excellent dialog with several jokes sprinkled throughout. The book has a Guardians of the Galaxy movie vibe to me...a group of losers who are about to embark on something grand. 8/10
