Batman: Damned #1Written by Brian Azzarello Art by Lee Bermejo That said, there is a series of panels that just made my eyes roll...he gave us a look at Bruce's junk. Just because it's a mature line doesn't mean you need nudity and I just don't see why it was included here. Sure, if we have Bruce walking around unclothed you're realistically going to see his junk...but what narrative purpose does it serve to actually portray that? It's just being "edgy" for the sake of being "edgy" which is why I tend to dislike these "mature" reader lines. But still, even though that was an unneeded scene it was still a good book. Grade: 8/10
Comics aren't just narrative, they are visual as well and in this Dark Label context I don't mind the batweiner at all. The artwork throughout is brilliant. I was also fortunate to get an advanced copy called the Uncorrected Proof, it was sent to select dealers, basically the entire book but wordless.
The art is part of the narrative, the two are one in the same and in this case Bruce's nudity didn't tell us anything about him as a person, it didn't highlight an emotional feeling or advance the plot...thus it's just there because it's a "mature" readers label and so it can be, which isn't a true artistic reason to include it. That's why I said I rolled my eyes when I saw they included the caveat that the black label imprint would be "mature" as well as a symbol of their best writers and artists putting out their best work as all too often in comics "mature" just means more graphic violence and sex...because, "why not?" rather than any true artistic reason.

Cap at war stories are always fun, but for me what made this special was the editorial at the end by Tini Howard; that essay about romani heritage really brought the story into a sharper focus, made it more real. That added layer really made it a great story for me and a fantastic choice for an annual. I didn't have anything on my pull list this week, but I will definitely be picking this up next Wednesday. Definitely worth it. It's nothing earth shattering, just a solid one and done which is always a good thing in my book.

I'm always on the fence about annuals (yes, even for Cap) because they can be so wildly variant in quality. There are actually some Cap annuals I don't own because I leafed through them and thought "no way am I spending full-price money on this", but then I never get around to dollar-bin diving for them.

Very true, not all annuals are created equal; though even if they're not the greatest I tend to atleast give them a shot if they are stand alone just because one and dones are so rare now and there is nothing worse in my mind as something billed as an annual but it's actual part Y of InfinityCrisis 3 which I have hitherto avoided like the plague.
