The film Iron Man 3 depicted my hometown of Chattanooga, Tennessee as a snowy, sleepy Town with one stoplight, one tavern, and no internet. In reality Chattanooga has 300,000 inhabitants and the fastest internet in the Southeastern United States. Also, snow is uncommon (it is in a valley), and accumulation of snow is rare. You've also got one hell of a train service there, I hear. Heh, file that one under “European mobs sure love their torches!” There is a huge Volkswagen plant and an unusually strong collection of private secondary schools as well as a thriving tourist industry. Come this time of year! It is lovely.

It's particularly weird considering Chattanooga is one of the most easily recognizable cities in America. Between the snaking river and Lookout Mountain, there's no possible way to mistake Chattanooga for anywhere else. Anybody who has ever seen Chattanooga will be able to instantly recognize it - and recognize when a city clearly isn't it.

Anybody who has ever seen Chattanooga will be able to instantly recognize it - and recognize when a city clearly isn't it. The more easily we can find information, the less we seem to do it. Think of all the old artists, movie directors, and writers who complied extensive clip files so that they'd be ready to draw, depict or describe someplace or something. Now, you can see the very image of Chattanooga Crimebuster mentioned -- as I just did -- in seconds. Unbelievable. Lazy might be another word for it.

The first thing I think of is Chattacon, having heard of it so often, like you'd think of Dragoncon for Atlanta.

The first thing I think of is Chattacon, having heard of it so often, like you'd think of Dragoncon for Atlanta. I go to both ChattaCon and Dragon Con often. Both are fun, but Dragon Con has ballooned into an unwieldy 80,000 attendee leviathan that has a ninety minute line just to get into the vendor hall. It needs a stadium plenary session to absorb the audience for the top draws. Chattanooga also has a second con called Con Nooga, and Atlanta has MomoCon as well.

The Pitt was the beginning of the end of the New Universe (and StarBrand, who I liked), so I was predisposed to not like it. But they made sure I'd hate it when they featured Griffiss Air Force Base in Rome, NY (my home town, eh?). It was only one panel, but that was more than enough. Griffiss was a modern, fully up-to-date base, but they showed the readers a barn. Cause anything outside of New York City was Hicksville, of course.
Which reminds me of a scene from the movie Tootsie which similarly pissed me off. The main character has a part in a play at the Syracuse (N.Y.) Arts Center. In reality, that's a big, beautiful building, lots of glass and lights, in the middle of downtown. The movie showed us a barn on the side of a country road. Seriously?

As I was reading your first paragraph, I was planning to write your second paragraph.
