This might be the earliest toy-based comic: 1942, though the original book preceded the dolls: so, you could argue the comic is book-based. The patent for the doll pre-dated the book by three years. The book and the doll were marketed together.

I almost included Hot Wheels but several things kept me from doing so. 1: I have NEVER seen an issue of this 6 issue series. EVER! 2: Did or Could any of us have ever actually seen/found or read the darn thing? Don't know but figuring it as being an "older" never reprinted (that I know of) I chose to leave it off or folks could choose other. I included Captain Action simply because I have seen issues (rather poor condition) over the years and the toy itself and it's comic series is ALWAYS referred to by other members here in the CCF. Selective Nerdism if you will?!? I've never seen those DC Hot Wheels comics either, nor really remember the old tv cartoon show, but I did find the vinyl LP from the same time oddly enough! I would love to see more of the Alex Toth comic than a page I saw reproduced in a fanzine accompanying a Dick Giordano interview. Not that it should be added but I had this 1949 comic that had a full page ad for the large Kewpie doll on the back cover. Really high quality art too, but then Will Eisner published it!

I voted Micronauts and ROM.
Both of these were Mantlo at the top of his game and they've both stood the test of time as far as I'm concerned.

I'd never heard of the Hot Wheel comic or cartoon until now.

Oh yes indeed, both series are ones you can go back to and read over time and time again. With each reading you can either find new things you missed or relive your past remembering when you were 1st reading them. Both take me instantly back into high school and being a teen.

Honestly, those are two of my favorite series.
Love ROM and I esp love the Micronauts.
Baron Karza is one of my favorite villains ever ! Even have a Michael Golden full size commission of him I'll post here sometime if I ever find it.

Karza is all kind of classic Marvel villainy. If he was a total MU creation he would be one of those upper echelon baddies everybody would face like Doom, Magneto and Loki. So many Machiavellian levels to play with and inspire stories. A baddest of the bad type that even other villain's would be smart to avoid dealing with for fear of pissing him off and getting on his naughty list. The Baron doesn't really play very well with others.

Karza also has simply one of the best villain names ever. It just sounds so evil and menacing, and then it gets nudged up to 11 when you add the Baron.

I also love Baron Bedlam as a villain moniker. Just so delightfully evil sounding. And are there varying levels of villainy to go along with the Barony title? Baron of bad jokes? Baron of Bedevilment? Baron of Trash? Baron of Desserts? Baron of Mischief? Baron of Potty Training? We the curious demand to know just how entitled are the Baron's of Mayhem? Great band name. Watch for their new Video and CD coming soon!!!

My granddaughter's name is Val but she looks like a Kewpie, so I call her Kewpie.

It was Mego's Sales Manager's last name and they added Baron to it.
Priceless !

So someone is lucky enough to have the surname Karza? I shouldn't be surprised although I am a bit (back when I was a kid, there was another kid with the last name Garza, which is close and almost as cool - I used to envy him for that).

I voted for ROM, though I also loved Micronauts. There was that ROM cross-over with the X-Men (ROM 17 - 18) where they fought Hybrid, who was not eco-friendly at all. They had Frank Miller covers (a year and change before he did the Wolverine mini-series), and Bill Mantlo delivered a memorable and disturbing body-horror tale ably illustrated by Sal Buscema.

and let's know forget the surprisingly good X-Men / Micronauts mini co-written by both Bill Mantlo and Chris Claremont with art by Butch Guice and Bob The art was good. The story was skeevy though.
