How is it that Marvel didn't license the song for the Ant-Man movies?
Creative Team: David Michelinie-writer, John Byrne-pencils, Bob Layton-inks, Tom Orzechowski & Diana Albers-letters, Bob Sharen & Mario Sen-colors, Roger Stern-edits
It's a CPL Gang reunion!
Synopsis: We start out in the present and work backwards, as Ant-Man has infiltrated Cross technological Enterprise (CTE) and is trying to rescue Dr Erica Sondheim, to operate on his daughter Cassie's heart. Ant-Man punches some guards, shrinks down, then gets hit with a stream of water from a kitchen sink spray nozzle (and the worlds longest hose, attached to it!)
We go back in time as Scott Lang is released from prison, after good behavior. he is even set up with an interview at Stark International. he meets up with his sister and his daughter Cassie...
Things go well until Cassie collapses in a softball game and is diagnosed with a defective aorta that is growing inward, creating a membrane that is restricting blood flow. It is inoperable. Medical bills mount and salary advances aren't enough. Scott starts casing swanky houses with an eye towards stealing enough to cover the bills. He is told about a radical new laser surgery, performed by Dr Erica Sondheim. he goes to see her; but, her practice is being dismantled and she is being spirited away. Some goons prevent her from talking with him and a massive, muscular, red arm tosses him aside when he tries to speak to her through a limo window. Scot is desperate and isn't taking this. he tracks Dr Sondheim to Cross technological Enterprises, but see that it is a fortress. Needing capital, he goes to hit one of the houses he has cased. Inside, he finds an advanced lab and a secret compartment, with a surprise...
Scott steals the gear and suits up, then tests things and finds himself with some ant helpers. he then heads for CTE and breaks in, leading to our fight, which we return to.
Scott tries to get r Sondheim out; but, is interrupted by Darren Cross, who is the big bruiser in red.
Scott fights Cross; but, the guy has enhanced sight and is able to hit Ant-Man and knock him for 6. He rips off the gas canisters and breaks the antenna of the cybernetic helmet, then has his goons chain him in a cell. he later shows up and explains his past. Darren cross built an empire; but, had a damaged heart. His techs developed a nuclear pacemaker; but, there were side effects.
He then reveals his plan to have the pacemaker removed and hearts installed from donors, kidnapped from slums and and shelters around the city. Scott doesn't like this and sneaks a spare set of antennae our of his boot and repairs the helmet (which Cross left him with, despite taking his other stuff). He calls his ant buddies and sends them to find the gas canisters...
Scott breaks out and attacks Cross, holding his own until Cross collapses. Turns out, Dr Sondheim sabotaged him by implanting his old, weak heart, instead of implanting a new one. The strain of the fight killed him. We cut ahead, as Dr Sondheim saves Cassie's life and gives Scott the good news, when Hank Pym, as Yellowjacket, shows up.
He was alerted to the theft by a secret security feature that Scott issed and followed him. He watched as Scott tested the gear and followed him to Cross, when he got zapped by the security system there...
He lets Scott keep the suit and encourages him to continue as a hero, and stay on the straight and narrow.
Thoughts: Great pair of issues and one of the rare times where creating a new version actually works well and is distinct from the original. Scott is an electronics expert; but, not a super scientist. He knows his way around circuit boards; but, can't create Pym Particles. He can keep the gear in working order; but, he isn't going to create something like it. His family connection and past as an ex-con help make him a bit different, even from Hawkeye, Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver. They were mostly misguided, while Scott was a deliberate criminal, though one that is trying to leave that behind.
The characterization would prove popular enough for Scott to continue in the role, making guest appearances in several marvel books (especially if Michelini was writing them), including some very popular Avengers stories. It is this version that would be tapped for the movie, with some alterations (including a more realistic look at the plight of an ex-con trying to find work). These comics didn't lead to a series; but, it did lead to a steady career, for Scott Lang. Well, until Marvel screwed that up! Then fixed it.
Michelinie does a great job with the story and excelled at this kind of stuff. he had a good handle for using tech in stories that made sense, and he was a dab hand at caper-style plots, including the segment of his Iron Man run where Tony, sans armor, has to infiltrate Justin Hammer's floating mansion, to shut down the mechanisms affecting the armor. Scott Lang appears there, helping outfit his boss with some specialized gear that would make Q proud.
What can I say about Byrne & Layton? Just fantastic art from guys who were becoming BIG DEALS! Layton would be the real artistic anchor of Iron Man, working over John Romita Jr pencils, then keeping the consistency when others came on the book, as well as co-plotting. Byrne was all over the place, elevating everything he touched, from Cap, to Iron man, Avengers, the X-Men and the FF. This was truly a great period at Marvel, just before the dam burst and the flood of people out of the company became overwhelming.
