It's definitely one of my favorite parts of the book, her secret identity is Haley and she is an adorable three legged mut: That T-shirt Ha, yeah I thought you might enjoy that. And yeah, it definitely seems like their pre-crisis relationship was duplicated into the post-crisis era despite what Secret Origins might have originally implied and honestly that's for the better. I know there are people that really love the Titans and think Kory and Dick are THE match, but for me it has always been and will always be Batgirl and Robin for the win. Another thought occurred to me on the topic is that there might be some segments in Batgirl Year One, Robin Year One and Nightwing Year One that add to the picture of their post-crisis relationship though its been a while since I read them to be sure. Much later down the road (2006) you also have Nightwing #117 where Dick proposes to Babs which while slightly hamfisted has definitely stuck with me. And MUCH later, during the Batgirl of Burnside period (which was really good!) there were several issues that while Babs was dating someone else really highlighted how the two could still be friends despite their pasts which was really great. Though definitely outside of your thread here these issues(Batigrl #10, 15, 17...and I think 25?) were just amazing reads for any fan of Dick and Babs.

Dick and Babs in 1999-2006Once Nightwing #16 establishes a post-Crisis romantic tension between Dick and Babs, multiple writers develop it slowly over a long period of time. Very little of it has any direct relationship to the scope of this thread, so I'll offer a brief summary of the highlights instead of an issue-by-issue exploration: Birds of Prey #8 (August 1999): Chuck Dixon has Dick and Babs share a kiss. Dick indicates that he'd like a romantic relationship with Babs. She turns him down but leaves Dick some hope for the future. Nightwing #38 (December 1999): Chuck Dixon has Dick and Babs kiss again, this time resulting in a five year relationship. Nightwing #87 (January 2004): Devin Grayson has Babs break up with Dick. While the mutual affection remains, Babs fears that Dick is becoming too much like Bruce. Nightwing #117 (April 2006): Devin Grayson has Dick propose, and Babs accepts, admitting that she was wrong to have broken things off two years earlier. Throughout these stories, a shared romantic past between the two is always alluded to, but no specifics are ever offered until the final moment of Nightwing #117, where Babs accepts the engagement, and the background image seems to suggest the relationship having begun during Batman Family: Granted, with no specific team-ups nor context ever mentioned, it's possible that Batgirl and Robin shared a very different history in the Post-Crisis, but this feels like a clear nod to loyal fans of the old will-they-won't-they chemistry between Babs and Dick in the title to which this thread is dedicated. The big moment from Batman Family #1I'm not done exploring the relationship between Dick and Babs (which continues to this day), but something important is about to happen in 2007 that requires its own entry.

I've never understood Team Kory. New Teen Titans was one of the first runs I ever read. I'd probably re-read the entire run twice by the time I turned twelve. And my takeway from those stories was that Dick and Kory were a terrible couple, their differences and incompatibilities emphasized on those pages far more than any kind of cohesion between the two. What did they share other than a bed? I still don't know. Ha! You beat me to it. It's been hard trying to navigate what aspects of their relationship are relevent to this thread and what aspects are not, but I think I've got it worked out now. Thanks!

Yeah, your timeline pretty much sums up the major beats of their "adult" relationship. The on again off again romance was always something I loved about their interactions in the early 2000's and the refrences to that in the recent Nightwing run are part of what really makes it sing for me. I mean, I know someone will eventually break up Dick and Babs again but for now it's been fantastic to really see their relationship really bloom.

Nightwing Annual #2 (June 2007) "Hero's Journey" Script: Marc Andreyko Pencils: Joe Bennett Inks: Jack Jadson Colors: Jason Wright Letters: Phil Balsman Grade: n/a (only exploring how this affects Batman Family continuity) Twenty four years after the last time the Batgirl and Robin teamups in Batman Family were directly referenced anywhere (see Detective Comics #526), we have a cover blatantly reminding us of this run, and YES! the story within does specifically reference a moment from Batman Family. This all-important moment from Batman Family #13 (September 1977) is clearly revisited in this issue published thirty years later: So it's all in continuity, then. Right? Well...no. As adorable a story as this is, it takes its own liberties, adding huge amounts of really fun backstory that weren't there before. And while it is amazing to see a young Dick and Babs back in action one last time: it's not the same young Dick and Babs. This particularly charming moment is arguably the most important page of the entire story in terms of chronology: This moment clearly predates Batman Family #1, as Dick and Babs are sixteen, are still in Gotham, and Dick still reports to Batman. The problem is that Dick and Babs did not know each other's identities until Batman Family #3, when Dick was already in college and Babs was a congresswoman in Washington. from Batman Family #3They also had a significant age difference in the original Batman Family run (Babs was in her early twenties and Dick was under 18), which made editorial nervous and resulted in their relationship never fully developing into a romance. Here, they are both sixteen. The idea that they had this adorable a romantic relationship at a significantly younger age is very appealing, but it also means that either Marc Andreyko doesn't know his Batman Family history, or he is intentionally creating a different backstory. After all, two soft company-wide reboots have passed since Crisis on Infinite Earths (Zero Hour in 1994 and Infinite Crisis just recently in 2005-2006), so Andreyko appears to be staking his claim, creating a revised origin in this new continuity that is similar to--but demonstrably different from--the one around which this project is centered. Thus, we have reached the end of these reviews, as the Dick and Babs relationship that continues today has its roots in a different history (and, don't forget, we've been through another major company-wide reset since even this 2007 story!). Heck, this story even contradicts the Post-Crisis, Post-Zero Hour history we were exploring as recently as Nightwing #39 (January 2000), which clearly indicates that Dick and Babs were never romantically involved between The Killing Joke and that issue. Here's the new version of what happened only weeks after Babs was paralyzed: To be fair, I actually like all of the changes Andreyko makes. They just make everything that follows irrelevent to this thread. And how ironic that the story that buries the original Batman Family continuity once and for all ends on this note:

Family in Crisis: A Handy Guide to How The Batman Family's Original Continuity Was Affected by Each Company-Wide RebootOriginal Continuity: Batgirl and Robin begin teaming up in Batman Family #1 (October 1975) and team up for the last time in Detective Comics #526 (May 1983). There is a definite chemistry between them under Elliot S. Maggin, but editorial eventually decides to downplay the romance due to Babs being in her early twenties and Dick being underage. Crisis on Infinite Earths (1985): Dick and Babs flirted as Robin and Batgirl and may have partnered together, but Babs was never really into Dick, instead obsessing over Batman: from Secret Origins #20Minor details about both characters' backstories are changed (most noteably that Babs was adopted by Jim Gordon), but none of it affects characterization nor storytelling. Zero Hour (1994): Now there has always been a romantic connection between Babs and Dick, and they definitely still teamed up together as Batgirl and Robin. Their shared history is very important to both characters. Infinite Crisis (2005-2006): Babs and Dick now teamed up at a far younger age while still under Batman's supervision. The romantic tension started far earlier (age sixteen), and they are now the same age. from Nightwing Annual #2Aspects of the Batman Family team-ups still happened, though differently. We are now fully in a new continuity. I wish I could go back in time and explain to Bob Rozakis that putting the kibbash on the Batgirl/Robin relationship was foolish because it is literally the only reason these old issues ever get referenced in the years that follow. No one remembers Dick's college girlfriend Lori Elton, Jeff the garage attendant who was Batgirl's best ally, Hudson University, Babs' post-congressional career at Humanities Research and Development, nor anything else from that run. Right or wrong (probably right), all The Batman Family run will ever be remembered for is the sparks between Dick and Babs.

The big moment from Batman Family #1 Of course, having this happen in Batman Family makes it a little creepy...

As the duly elected representative of team Kori (by myself) I'd like to reply:
1) Dick and Babs essentially grew up together.. while of course Jim Gordon exists, they're much too akin to siblings for any romance not to be icky.
2) Babs DID have a thing with Bruce for a bit in some versions... how weird is that? Liking the same girl as your dad is the stuff of trashy sitcoms.
3) Opposites attract. As a person that has been happily married almost 25 years to someone that is very opposite to me in many ways, I can attest that old axiom is true. Having someone you trust and care offer you a different perspective and unique experiences is far more healthy than people with too much commonality.. . that can lead to alot of petty bickering.
4) Kori is a much better emotionally adjusted person... she has some family issues, sure but they're sorted out and far away.. sort of the real life equivalent of having crazy in-laws in Texas when you live in New England that you see every years at most. Barbara issues have mainly been retconned away now, but they could come back at any time.
5) Kori is a much stronger person emotionally.. if something happened to Dick, Kori would get revenge.. Barbara would be sad and mourn... I like revenge better.

One other thing, as I'm still trying to get Shax to read the current Nightwing book... I'm pretty sure Dick proposed a couple issues ago and got a 'maybe later' (it was the Nite-Mite issue.. yeah, there was a Nite-Mite, and he was surprisingly Awesome) I'm definitely hoping with a Titans book now perhaps they'll reverse course a bit. Now if we could just get Bruce Wayne to retire and have Damian be Batman with Maps and his sidekick I'd be a happy guy

What did they share other than a bed? I still don't know. Fascination, I'd say, as opposites attract. They were attracted to each other like moths to the flame, or like opposite magnetic poles . Dick was a very serious, cerebral, proper and private individual who enjoyed a bad time; Kory was a carefree, sensual, very emotional and extremely open one; while they didn't have much in common, they sure got each other out of their respective comfort zone! I think Kory and Dick worked great as a romantic couple, even without guarantees that they could stay together for long. In my opinion, their lack of commonality would actually be a better argument against their being "just friends". Workplace friends, sure, but not personal friends. Dick and Babs as a couple I have no opinion of, since I must have read something like five comics with Barbara Gordon in them over the years (not much of a Batman fan, I'm afraid). I have something of a hard time seeing Dick getting into a romantic relationship that is not almost completely hormonally fuelled, because otherwise I think he'd rather be married to his job. But I may be too hard on the kid, so if he managed to get into a mature relationship with Babs, good for him! ... aaaaand I see that I basically repeated what wildfire2099 said. Sorry for the echo!
