Just in case anybody wants to participate, CBR is taking submissions of lists of your top ten comic book writers and top ten comic book artists, to compile a "top 100" list. www.cbr.com/vote-top-100-comic-book-writers-artistsI submitted my list. That was difficult! I kept putting people on the list of ten, and then see them disappear of the bottom of the list as I added people above them. The deadline is noon on Nov 30 by the way.

Sounds good to me, although not sure how I can whittle it down to ten!

I'm always vaguely annoyed by the mainstream bias in these lists - Most of my absolute # 1 favorite creators both write and draw their own material.

I feel I should've gone there just to vote for George Carlson (Jingle Jangle Comics) for Harlan Ellison.

This is an issue I have had with, say, Top 10 lists devoted to modern Doctor Who. It would be more accurate to describe such lists as "Top 10 moments that we've recently watched on Doctor Who..." or something like that. Good lists are about historical context as much as anything. I mean, I included Mike W. Barr in my vote for that CBR list. And John Byrne on the artist poll. It shouldn't be about who is hot at the moment.

Yes, recall bias is a real thing; we are wired to think more frequently about recent events than those long past. That's why I hope we all submitted lists, to help balance the scales! I watched the Capaldi episode "Time Heist" last night and had trouble deciding whether it was one of the best of "new Who" or one of the best ever. Probably both.

I hope we balanced the scales, too.
I remember noticing names when I was a kid. When I first did that, I would then pick up any books or individual issues written by people. For example, if I saw Denny O'Neill or Len Wein listed as a writer, that was a "mark of quality" for me. Hell, the book could have been called "The History Of Fire Hydrants" and I'd have still picked it up had those two been writing it.
Same with art. I like John Byrne's art. Even if I am not particularly interested in a concept, I'll follow something if i like the artist.

I like Don Newton's art a lot and noticed he did some Aquaman in the '70s, so mainly because of that I bought the run (and thanks to member pinkfloydsound17 too, they're as good or better than expected). Lists and numbers are all pretty meaningless to me, like say you rated only nine people as absolute greats, do you add a tenth just to make it 10? A lot of awards ballots are the same where people vote for someone in a category they aren't that familiar with just to vote for someone (so Hugo fan awards often just go to whomever's name is most familiar).

That's a good point about the Hugo awards, BeccaBear67.
In this poll, the challenge for me was deciding who to exclude. Really wanted to get Mike W. Barr in there, but that meant excluding another choice.
But with some polls/lists, it can be about making up the numbers. If someone asked me to name the Top Ten Modern Doctor Who episodes that I thought were the best, well I can only really think of 5-7. So I'd be adding 3 just to make up the numbers.

If I get around to it, I'll submit a list again, but I tend to forget these things so often. Maybe I can push Franquin to appear on the list.
Edit: Nevermind, way past deadline already.

I submitted mine but yeah, it was tough. Especially the artists, for some reason.
