Spectrum is a more original name and I like the costume better too, the character deserves that! Kamala Khan the new Ms. Marvel seems pretty original too outside the recycling of the name. Yeah, Kamala's main link is that of being a fan girl of Carol Danvers, and swiping her costume design. I'd actually argue she's MORE popular than Carol at this point though, despite Marvel's attempt to convince us otherwise.

I suspect that Carol's image is more familiar to the public thanks to advertisements for her upcoming movie. We'll see how things stand a year from now. A Ms. Marvel movie including both Carol and Kamala (mostly the latter) would make sense, if the American public is ready for a semi-traditional Muslim heroine.

Would current Mr. Terrific count as more popular than the original one? I never read many Golden Age comics, but Michael Holt has been in quite a few things and is headlining his own team comic currently.

The first super-character I saw killed off in comics was the original Mr. Terrific in a Justice League. The idea of it rather shocked me but I guess I recovered in time to accept the death of Phoenix.

I think it is safe to say that Wasp, who was introduced as a sidekick and love interest for Hank Pym, easily eclipsed him. Going outside the US, you'd have to point to Valentina, from Guido Crepax. She was introduced as the girlfriend of Neutron, who was the star of Crepax's strip. She would soon go from minor character to the lead, to the point that most people are unaware of Neutron. Marsupilami was a character introduced in Franquin's run on Spirou & Fantasio, who became the star of his own feature, leading to his importation by Disney (who mucked it up). The Smurfs began as characters in Peyo's Johan et Pirlouit and then quickly pushed the human characters aside. Popeye was not the star of Thimble Theater, in the early days; but, soon pushed Castor Oyl to the side and became the star. Snuffy Smith elbowed out Barney Google. Good examples all round. Smurfs probably is the best example of this kinda thing. A few more from stips: Monte replaced Robot-Man (Robotman?) . And Blondie kept the name of her strip but Dagwood totally edger her out as the central character.

I was looking over some scans of DC's Star-Spangled Comics, and it appears that the Star-Spangled Kid's sister, Merry (Girl of a Thousand Gimmicks), took over the Kid's series. Even though it maintained his masthead initially, the character who started off appearing in three stories every issue disappeared from the book that was (practically) named after him. No big loss, though. SSK was one of DC's worst lead features, with atrociously amateurish and ugly art.

Oh I didn't know that. Merry is a much cooler concept than the SSK.

I would argue that
Charlton's Action Heroes have been far surpassed by The Watchmen

How about Machine Man taking over Kirby's 2001 series? I liked it much better as an anthology series with a different story and lead character every few issues.
Speaking of Kirby, towards the end of the Eternals series it became almost an Ikaris solo book, much to its detriment. Ikaris has been treated as the star or lead Eternals character by many subsequent writers, though not by all of them.

Side question 3: What other legacy villains were more popular than the first version? I don't think Harry Osborne or the new Venoms ever quiiiiite made it.) Madame Hydra killed the original Viper, who was a very minor Marvel villain, and took over his name and costume (more or less). I don't know what she's currently calling herself but she had a much higher profile as the Viper than then original did.
