 Savage Sword of Conan #1. Written by Gerry Duggan. Art by Ron Garney. Wow that was an awesome first issue! It starts with Conan adrift at sea. Conan is rescued by a pirate ship only to find himself destined to be sold into slavery. Conan fights back once his health returns and finds the pirate crew is not human? He escapes and washes up on an island... Conan is a versatile character. He can play so many roles. This issue has him crossing paths with dark magic and prevailing. Well written and beautifully illustrated by Garney. I can't wait for #2! 9/10. |

Hawkman #9. Written by Robert Venditti. Art by Bryan Hitch. Carter is back in London to try and get more answers by talking to Madame Xanadu. However the Deathbringers appear over London... Venditti brings Carter face to face with his past as a Deathbringer. By the end of the issue it felt like the tension increased. Good writing. Hitch excels at this style of art with big creatures appearing over the skies of London. This title continues to be one of my favorites right now. 9/10. |

 Superman #8. Written by Brian Michael Bendis. Art by Ivan Reis, Brandon Peterson. The story of Jon's return as a 17 yr old continues. In this issue Superman & Lois use the technology in the Fortress to do a scan on Jon to get answers. Jon also continues his story about his space travels with Jor-El. An OK issue. Not much happens. 6/10. |

Wonder Woman #64. Written by G. Willow Wilson. Art by Jesus Merino. Veronica Cale has Nemesis locked in her basement. Somehow Cale has control over Nemesis and uses her to discredit Wonder Woman. OK Wilson's first arc was terrible IMO. However I have been enjoying her second arc as she deals with the fallout of stuff she set up in the first arc. I also liked Merino's art. WW is improving. 7/10. |

Wonder Twins #1: I never thought these goofy Super Friends leftovers would be featured in their own book....and it’s actually pretty good! Zan and Jayna are on Earth, courtesy of Superman. He’s friends with their dad and something unrevealed happened on Exor resulting in the twins coming to Earth. Members of the JL cameo as well as El Dorado (!!). The twins are sort of interns at the Hall of Justice. In addition to their jobs, they’re trying to fit in at high school, especially Zan who fails miserably (in a hilarious scene). What I liked about this book is how well it captures the high school scene and all the pitfalls of trying to popular and fitting in. Definitely a fun read with art that fits the tone and is well done. It’s cartoony but not in a caricature way. It’s very eye pleasing. Great start!

Supergirl 27: Supergirl finds herself in the midst of a space civil war alongside the Omega Men. Lots of big fight scenes ensue as Supergirl discovers holding Rogal Zarr’s Axe seems to encourage rage. She fights it off during her fight with Splice, whom she almost decides to kill. Z’ndr And Krypto discover that Z’ndr’s mother dies not care for Kryptonians. Also the thought dead members of the Omega Men are clones and there is an army of cloned monster Supergirls. Ryand’r (Starfire’s brother ) makes a quick appearance and seems to catch Supergirl’s eye.
The art is hit and miss. Some panels look messy while others are great. Not having Maquire consistently on art hurts the allure of the title. Plus, the whole sidestep with the Omega Men seems to distract from what this arc was to be about.

WW is improving. 7/10. I didn't like this very much because Veronica Cale is boring. She's a corrupt businessperson with a petty grudge and the personal power to see it through. So she's the female Lex Luthor. And I'm trying to remember when I found corrupt businessman Lex Luthor to be interesting. Pretty much never. I'm guessing that Trump isn't president in the Rebirth Universe because I'm pretty sure Veronica Cale would have a government position, probably Secretary of the Department of Education. Or maybe head of the Office of Meta-Human Affairs. |

Detective Comics #998The Countdown to Detective Comics #1000 isn't getting any better. Professor Hugo Strange is completely wasted here. And guess what?! It turns out that Jason Blood was among the experts that young Bruce Wayne sought out as a mentor when he was learning all the things he would need to know to be Batman! And guess what?! Also among the mentors currently being added to the throng is Silas Stone, the father of Victor Stone, better known as Cyborg, founding member of the Justice League! Did young Bruce Wayne also seek out Paul Gambi so he could learn how to sew a super-costume from the best? It's like Muppet Babies, where all the muppets knew each other when they were babies.

Captain Marvel #2I'm so glad I've been picking this up! The Nuclear Man has put some kind of invisible barrier around Roosevelt Island and trapped a bunch of New Yorkers within, including Carol, Spier-Woman, Hazmat and Echo. (I don't know who Echo is.) The Nuclear Man used to be known as Mahkizmo, and he's definitely a character who couldn't possibly suffer from a little tinkering. Now, Carol and her allies must fight off the Nuclear Man (he's very powerful) and figure how to save Roosevelt Island. I'm liking this quite a bit, but I really hope they don't try to turn the Nuclear Man into a recurring villain.

True Believers: Captain Marvel vs. Ronan #1I read a lot of issues of Captain Marvel when I was a kid. My brother collected it for a while and when he quit reading comics, I bought it sporadically. I've probably read a little more than half of the issues between #35 and #62. (And I still have the "Trial of the Watcher" issues in my collection.) But I had never read #41, so I was very happy to spend a dollar on the True Believers reprint! It brings back so many memories! The Kree Supreme Intelligence, Ronan, the Universal Church of Truth, Rick Jones, Nega-Bands! I'm going to have to track down all these issues and read the whole run some day. It also makes me want to read "The Trial of the Watcher" again.

I also picked up Marvel Tales featuring the Black Widow, but I haven't had a chance to read it yet. I've read a lot of these stories before. her first appearance in Tales of Suspense #52, her first "new look" in Spider-Man #87, Amazing Adventures #1. I'm looking forward to reading them again! There's aalso a Golden Age reprint of a Timely character called the Black Widow. And also Marvel Fanfare #10. I haven't read either of these before. So I'm looking forward to it. |

I'm liking this quite a bit, but I really hope they don't try to turn the Nuclear Man into a recurring villain. Cool designs! Echo was a kindred spirit to Daredevil who was deaf instead of blind. She had the same ability as Taskmaster: that of imitating anyone’s fighting skills. She was an Avenger for a while and was killed in one of the Moon Knight series because it’s supposed to be interesting to see new characters die. I believe she was brought back in some other book later on with no explanation whatsoever (although I hope that the explanation is that pointless deaths should just be ignored!) |

Archie and Friends #1: Music Jam
4 reprints of the new stories that appear in the digests. This collection has a musical theme. Story 1 features Jellybean filling in on drums with the Archies when Jughead gets food poisoning. Story 2 is about Brigitte singing a jingle for an embarrassing product. Story 3 finds the Archies at an award show being upstaged by a Kanye West type. The final story has Archie and Jughead on a mission to replace Mr.Andrews’s prized record album (broken by Jughead). All ages fun in the classic Archie style.

I also didn't love yet another battle when Conan is the last survivor.. that happens a bit too often, IMO. |
