What always softened the "doesn't have to sleep or eat" bit for me was that he still CAN, he just doesn't HAVE TO.

He doesn't have a physiological need to sleep but they established that he does have a psychological need to dream.

I like Superman as presented by Siegel and Shuster in the first year or so of the characters life. Beyond that I have zero use for him. Even Alan Moore couldn't make him interesting. A man after my own heart. Two men the exact polar opposite of my heart (except I do also like Siegel and Shuster Supes).

There was also a story--I think based on an idea sent by a reader--that Superman's desire not to be recognized as Clark led to him subconsciously hypnotizing people to see them differently. The affect was magnified by the kryptonian lenses in his glasses. I wondered if anyone remembered that Martin Pasko story! In the comic, they had an artist draw a sketch of Clark (as he appears to people when wearing his Kryptonian glasses) and he looked older and thinner; far more staid and ordinary than Supes. I must say I prefer the idea of him being a good actor and changing his posture!
