One of EC's ill-fated "New Direction" titles: Few ever pulled off the phony newspaper cover in such a semi-realistic way as EC.

One of EC's ill-fated "New Direction" titles: Few ever pulled off the phony newspaper cover in such a semi-realistic way as EC. Yeah, but after the first issue, they probably thought it got lost on the stands and added color. By the fourth issue, even the illustration was colored traditionally. BTW--a great series if only because of two Craig stories each issue,

Huh, I wonder if Milligan's Front Page (on my Animal Man cover) was inspired by this character.

This story is SO GREAT! It should be considered ESSENTIAL for Joker fans. It's the beginning of the Joker's Underworld Media Empire! He also had a TV station (Detective #365) and a movie studio (Detective Comics #671 to #673) at one time or another. If I was writing Batman, I'd make the Joker's Underworld Media Empire a major Gotham institution! (There's also a Golden Age Batman story about a radio station run by criminals, but the Joker's not involved … but he could be!) There needs to be a story about the new anti-social media sensation that's all the rage among the Gotham criminal element … Jokerfy!

Batman in collusion with the Russians... Bolland's preliminary for this one. Missing the little Dick Sprang Batman along the top of the paper though.

Though I really like the photo realistic look of Spike Dolan on that cover, it seems a little too modest of The Joker to put someone other than himself on the front page of his own paper. Even if "Spike Dolan" looks a lot like Frank Gorshin to my eyes. It's also a nice touch having Batman and Robin posed next to that window as if The Joker decided that the lighting was best there for their picture to be taken.

Has anybody but me read "The Joker's Journal" from Detective Comics #193? As far as I know, it was only reprinted once, in a very rare black and white paperback collection of Batman reprints. But I found it online on an old livejournal post with some very funny commentary.
It's not quite my favorite Joker story, but it's in the Top Five, easy.
