Saturday is Free Comic Book Day. Not sure how many will make the trip out, or what folks plan to pick up, but I am going to highly recommend picking up Hope #1 from Source Point Press. It's by Dirk Manning (Nightmare World, Tales of Mr. Rhee) and K. Lynn Smith (Plume). I posted about it here last year when I picked up a copy from Dirk at last year's Gem City Comic Con. It was the best super-hero comic of the year for me, and it was my wife's favorite comic of the year. We already backed the Kickstarter for the hc collection of 1-6, but will be buying the issues as they come out as well. #2 will follow in June, so FCBD is the only way to get a copy of #1. Don't miss it. Let's put it this way-I have a stack of doubles I will list for the Classic Comics Exchange in the coming months, but I will gladly trade anything in the pile to someone who gets Hope #1 and doesn't like it for their copy of Hope (which I will then pay forward to someone else to try to see if they will like it). If you get it, read it, and don't like it, drop me a line, but I am betting if you pick it up, you will love it. -M

Things that make you go HMMMMMM. One LCS advertising: spend $50 and get 1 pre-packed box of 100 comics free and spend $100 and get 2 pre-packed boxes of 100 comics free. Have to wonder: what crap comics are you going to receive in that box of 100? Free crap is still free crap.
Another LCS having a BIG day for FCBD utilizing a parking lot across the street from the store: 25 different writers/artists to meet/greet. Medieval Society Sword fight demonstrations all day. Magic show for kids. Podcast from 2p-3p. Kids story time T 2:30P-3:30P. 25% off all comics in store (big whoop if you are after back issues as store has very limited back issues) new and old. All the restaurants in area doing FCBD and May the Fourth be with you Star Wars Day discounts (like 8 restaurants in walking distance/area) of varying prices. All this from 10am to 8:00pm Saturday and Sunday.

Probably not going to bother this year. Usually my local shop has a good sale on collected editions and graphic novels this day, but apparently not this year.

The stores around my area don't do enough to make it worth a trip, IMO. I have a pile of old FCBD giveaways in my to read pile that I've never had the motivation to look at that doesn't need to be bigger.

I went, picked up a handful of the free books (Hellboy, Buffy/Firefly, Avengers, Spider-Man for me, Stranger Things and Doctor Who for my older daughter), but my main reason for going was to shop the bargains that my LCS always has (deep-discount TPBs and markdowns on all back issues). From that I got:
Devil Dinosaur: The Complete Collection - $5 Galactus The Devourer TPB (L. Simonson writing, Muth and J. Buscema art) - $5 Guardians of the Galaxy: The Complete Collection v1 (Abnett and Lanning) - $15 (I already got v2 at Ollie's earlier in the year)
Because my sister had given me a $25 gift certificate for the shop for Christmas, my bill for those three books came to $1.75 for the sales tax. Well worth the trip!

I went to Things From Another World in Beaverton, where the line was out the door and around the building from their 9am opening until mid-afternoon. They had a 10-freebie limit per person and a lot of things marked down but I was short on time and just picked 10 from the free tables. Then I went over to Other Worlds Games and Comics in the Hillsdale neighborhood in Portland. The local shops seem to have an extraterrestrial theme to their names. Anyway, their limit was 3 per person but they also had some Halloween ComicFest leftovers and Star Wars previews that didn't count against the limit. So I think I ended up with 16 comics in all.

I didn't visit any of the stores on Saturday, but I did on Sunday. One was still having their sale from Saturday-50% off all toys and action figures, 60% off vintage comics, 25% off tpb and collected issues.

Picked up Dragonfly and Dragonflyman #1 and The Tick on Saturday.
The Dragonflyman tale is a nice little one-shot set prior to Ahoy Comics recent miniseries and if their six part series marked a turning point in the heroes lives, then the FCBD giveaway marked what a typical day/night in their lives looked like, which was still pretty bizarre. The tale of two Dragonflys parallel one another with one telling of the tale being darker than the other though that might not seem apparent at first. The issue also marked the first appearance of the Grim and Gritty Earth's Stinger which is significant since as the first series established, it was his death that set Dragonfly on a downward spiral.
The Tick issue contained two Tick stories as well as a couple of one pagers. I thought the back up tale in which The Tick believes that he might actually be a coyote was the better of the two, but the first was entertaining as well. The Tick and Arthur are captured by a collector as the ultimate collectibles and manage to escape only when Arthur points out that without them, all the collector will have left to look forward to from here on out, are whatever inferior take offs are released to replace them. Unfortunately, it may very well be another year before we see any more new Tick stuff comic wise since New England comics hasn't announced anything that I'm aware of. It's a shame since comics could really use something fun these days.
