JFTR, Mariel Hemingway's legs are from IV, not III. I was referring to IV, in my reply to Badwolf. III has the lovely Annette O'Toole; but, she never gets gussied up like Hemingway. Quite frankly, I mostly have 3 and 4 blocked out of my mind, except for certain scenes (some of the Smallville stuff, in 3, as well as the fight with the alternate Superman; and Mariel Hemingway's legs, in 4) For what it's worth, I always thought Margot Kidder had a nice pair of stems, too.

I is a cinematic masterpiece...until Lex Luthor gets introduced. Then it's an adequate but problematic superhero film.
II is never as masterful, but it's far more consistently entertaining.
III is dumb as hell, but ridiculously fun. And that's exactly what they hired Richard Lester (primarily a director of outrageous comedies) to give them.
IV is so utterly forgettable. I don't think I've re-watched it since high school.

Incidentally, I read a tabloid story about plans for a fifth Superman film. It could have been a columnist simply filling space, but he claimed the fifth movie would have seen Hackman return as Luthor, Reeve return as Superman - and feature Supes having to save the world from environmental disaster. Not sure how true that is, perhaps a publication like Back Issue would know for sure.
There was also a tabloid story in the early-to-mid 90s about Reeve being offered an undisclosed sum to return to the role by 1994/95. Again, I have no idea if it was just a columnist filling space.

After the third film, I wanted to like number 4 so bad, but it had the feel of a cheaply made movie.

I wish Supergirl and Lana Lang had been in the fourth movie (if it had been made by the Salkinds and produced properly).
I listened to the director's commentary for Supergirl. That's a film I enjoy. It's not perfect, but it's earnest and has a fairytale quality to it. Helen Slater is very good in the role. The director talked about the original plans for Superman in the film. Because, for whatever reason, he didn't appear, we got that rather feeble "Superman is on a peace-keeping mission in another galaxy..." radio broadcast.
So I'd have loved Helen Slater's Supergirl to appear in a fourth movie produced by the Salkinds, given a proper budget, special effects, etc. And given Lana Lang got a job at the "Daily Planet" at the end of III, I'd have liked to see her included, too.
In the multiverse, there exists a world where the Salkinds produced Superman IV...

Agreed--that documentary is a wealth of information on the Cannon film experience...and how misguided the Golan - Globus pair were about so many things. About Superman IV: I saw it when released, and knowing the Salkinds no longer had any participation with it, I did not have much hope that it was worth the effort. I was correct, as any story where a superhero actually addresses that age-old question ("Why don't superheroes just end all wars / get rid of the world's nuclear arsenal, etc.?") instantly misses the reason why fantasy characters exist at all. They are living up to a dream--dreams that will never be fulfilled in reality, and any attempt to carry that out take the audience out of the story. Then, there's Nuclear Man. Really? Why not call him The Meltdown Man or General Atomica, as both would be just as on-the-nose and silly as Nuclear Man. There are other, unfortunate issues with some of the returning cast, but I will leave that for others to discuss if they choose to.

Helen Slater was nearly perfect as Supergirl, but was dropped in the middle of a film that tried a slapped-together rinse and repeat many of the original Superman's plot or emotional beats, failing miserably. Under any other circumstances, I would never purchase a bad superhero film on Blu Ray, but Slater is such a strong visual interpretation of the character, that I would consider buying it. Despite its many flaws, its still head and shoulders above that terrible CW Supergirl TV series.
