Bleeding Cool is reporting Marvel will be publishing a number of books by creators not associated with Marvel or who haven't done work for Marvel in some time. No confirmation what the titles will be, if they are ongoings, minis, one-shots, or what, just that these creators will be doing something for Marvel starting in August. A couple of the names really got my attention too.
Here's who BC says is involved...
Erik Larsen
Taboo (of the Black Eyed Peas) and Jeffrey Veregge
Walt Simonson (doing the book solo so writing & art)
Mark Waid & John Cassaday
Brad Meltzer and Julian Totino Tedesco
J. Michael Straczynski & Ed McGuiness
George Perez and Al Ewing (Perez coming out of retirement to do the book)
Joe Hill & Mike Allred
Ok Simonson is almost a must buy no matter what the property is, the Prerez book might be to. I am also intriged by Hill & Allred and Waid & Cassaday. I'll have to wait and see what they are if and when Marvel confirms them.

Erik Larsen made mention of it on his Twitter page. No details but I would like to see him draw a marvel book.

Also, I don’t care much for Perez as a writer.

Also, I don’t care much for Perez as a writer. Well Al Ewing is the writer on that project, Perez likely doing the art, which is why I think it is a one-shot of some sort. -M

I thought his eyes were bad. Hence the coming out of retirement. But what it looks like is not a series of books, but a book. Something int he vein of Marvel #1000, an 80th anniversary special with a number of short stories by these creative teams, some as short as 1 page, others a bit longer. Not sure on total page count. Of course still unconfirmed, but it looks like Marvel borrowing the format of Action #1000 and Detective #1000 for an anniversary special. Added tot he creative list, an Alex Ross story and something from the writers of Into the Spider-Verse. -M

I thought his eyes were bad. Hence the coming out of retirement. My point is that he WOULDN'T draw if his eyes were bad. It's surprising is all. Maybe he can draw short stories or for short periods of time without it being an issue.

Simonson on a bit of Conan would certainly be fun! I have mostly liked JMS' Marvel stuff, too. Definitely less exciting if it's some random 1 shot pretend anniversary, but we'll see. Maybe connect to the History of the MU project?

More creative teams emerging... there's a lot of names now lending to the idea it's a bunch of short or 1 pagers. Hence the coming out of retirement. My point is that he WOULDN'T draw if his eyes were bad. It's surprising is all. Maybe he can draw short stories or for short periods of time without it being an issue. He never said he couldn't draw anymore, only he couldn't keep up with long projects or monthly deadlines, so doing a short special project here or there isn't that surprising, it its something he wants to do or enjoys doing. It was spending long hours at the drawing board grinding out pages he couldn't do anymore, but if it's a 1 or 2 page thing he can do maybe a panel or two a day on, he can manage it. -M

The problem with these types of books is that the “story” is usually fluff. If they are doing 1 page each that’s what it will be.

The problem with these types of books is that the “story” is usually fluff. If they are doing 1 page each that’s what it will be. Like Action and Detective #1000, it will be a celebration of Marvel's history, and within those confines both of those produced some very good stories. So what if it is fluff, as long as it is a fun or entertaining read with some quality art. It's the idea that stories have to "matter" rather than just be a quality read/story that drives the event/cross-over/new #1/this changes everything type of books that clutter the market and are eroding away the actual reader base. The way the creative teams are shaping up, my guess is that Al Ewing will be writing some kind of framing sequences with different artists doing each part of that sequence, and other creators will be doing the stories being framed, but that is just pure speculation on my part. -M

When I saw the title of this topic, I thought it might be about pest control workers visiting Marvel offices. Not sure if it's a UK thing, but we often call mice or cockroaches (to name two) visitors here. ;-)
It has certainly got people talking, and I am excited by it, especially for the reasons mrp has explained.
I've checked the list again. No John Byrne or Chris Claremont? (Not that I was advocating putting them together of course!).

Now that you mention that, It is strange that the more famous Marvel creators weren't asked to participate. Frenz is there , but what about Sal Buscema, Keith Pollard, maybe some of the other Image guys ?
