Pssst...Make sure to check out the Advance Warning Thread before jumping in with your selection! Absolutely everyone is welcome to participate once you've read-up on the event.10. T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents vs. The Subterraneansby Dan Adkins and Steve Ditko T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents #7 (August 1966)T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents was rarely a particularly innovative nor exciting book, but whenever Steve Ditko was on a story, you knew it was going to be something special, both in terms of visuals and in terms of characterization (I've argued extensively that he plotted most or all of the stories he drew for Tower). In this instance, he is brought on to bump off a character that wasn't playing well with the readers. What he ended up giving us was one unforgettable rumble in which we watch that character suffer a truly tragic demise at the hands of a cold-blooded race of killers, and then see his normally good-natured, wise-cracking teammates turn murderous with indignation. It's a full on execution, and it's both shocking and damn powerful to watch. Definitely a high points of the entire series for me, earning the number 4 spot on my Steve Ditko's Legacy at Tower Publishing list last summer.

Oh, ok, that was really fast. Oh my. I thought of 2 so I will put one here. From the Goon # 2 (2003) by Eric Powell The Good and Frankie vs. Dr. Dr. Hieronymous Alloy and his monster. It's funny, it's brutal, it has a monster that looks like it was produced by Roger Corman at it's cheapest, and it ends - as all great conflicts in human history must - with the production of a slightly cheaper can of creamed corn.

Let's see if how many I can come up with...I have a #1, but not sure how many others I will come up with. So let's start with Batman vs. The Spirit by Darwyn Cooke from Batman/The Spirit #1 cover dated January 2007. Building on the comic trope of misunderstanding upon meeting, the Spirit and the Batman get into a brawl as they investigate the same case... Cooke does the fight in extreme close ups and keeps a dark moody noirish vibe going through the sequence, which works well for both characters, and keeps it short, so it is quite impactful to the story with Batman emerging on top...this time. Of course, following the trope, the misunderstanding is resolved by the appearance of other foes... and of course more rumbles ensue. Cooke's fight choreography and mastery of mood and light and dark makes this short scene memorable. -M

The Incredible Hulk VS "Hulk Hogan" from Marvel Comics Presents #45 (1990)It seems a natural match-up: comic book Hulk VS Hulk Hogan (not actually called Hulk Hogan in the comic). And Marvel Comics Presents #45 gave us that very contest. It was a one-sided rumble with "Hulk Hogan" getting his clock cleaned. Nothing he tried worked against the Hulk, and the Hulk enjoyed himself a little too much as he put the arrogant Hulkster down for the count. I wish I could have found better-quality images. I chose this one because it's a) fun, and b) I'd always wondered what would have happened if the two Hulks had fought!

10. Kitty Pryde vs N’garai X-Men #143, 1981 David vs Goliath anyone? Take one teen heroine modeled after Sigourney Weaver, add one grotesque, Gigeresque extradimensional beastie, and voila! Instant danger. Chris Claremont and John Byrne channeled Ridley Scott’s film “Alien” with this solo outing for X-man trainee Kitty Pryde as a giant monster chases her around the empty mansion. It can wound even her intangible form, but she outsmarts it, first luring it into the Danger Room’s gauntlet of traps and finally incinerating it with the afterburner of the Blackbird jet, which is more or less how the Alien movie ended as well. Byrne and Claremont both have great affection for the character, and their differing ideas for her development were one of several conflicts that led to the dissolution of their partnership. Claremont of course has returned to Kitty many times over the years. Byrne has returned to her even this year, writing/drawing a new X-Men story (190 pages and counting) set in the immediate post-Dark Phoenix era. "Kitty fights alone" is one of the major plot lines again, judging by these early pages depicting her facing M.O.D.O.K. and A.I.M. in a secret Savage Land base.

10. Batman Vs. The Hyperclan By Grant Morrison, Howard Porter, John Dell JLA #3 January 1997
Batman was catapulted into being the UberBat from the way he was written in this version of the Justice league that showcased the big 7. This might have been the scene where he was catapulted into that The Hyperclan were Martians that disguised themselves into heroes that came to earth to "cure" all its problems, but in reality were there to take over and kill the JLA. Batman works out who they are and in this scene, he is confronted by them. Remember, they have the abilities of The Martian Manhunter , so Batman does what he does best. He outsmarts his opponent. That last panel with Batman clenching his fist might be my most favorite panel of all time. The beauty of the actual fight is that it all happens off panel as you see him dragging their unconscious bodies behind him in the next issue.

The Good and Frankie vs. Dr. Dr. Hieronymous Alloy and his monster. Could you give me a little more info about this rumble? Which issue of The Goon it came from, who wrote and drew it, etc? Saves me A LOT of extra work at the end!

10. Thor vs Hercules by Kirby/Lee Thor #126 (January 1966)
I found this issue many years later torn and ripped at a thrift store while visiting my grandparents up in Payson one summer around 1970 or so. It was my introduction to the Marvel version of Hercules. I knew Herc from the Steve Reeves movies off television so I was excited to discover this. Herc is out on a pub crawl when he and Thor start their rumble over the ever so dull Jane Foster. I have to wonder if she fully appreciated having 2 mythological hunks fighting over her affections? Add to the mix a Odin who demands the unreasonable from his son and decides to cut his powers in half in the middle of the match no less! I kid you not, does Odin get worst father of the year award or what? Of course Thor looses to Herc who is totally ignorant to the fact he was jobbed and it really isn't a win. But here begins the bromance of Thor and Herc. It has chills, it has thrills and romance and stupidity galore. Two big strong, dumb guys fighting it out over a girl. How junior high can you get? I LOVE IT. What a fight! This begins my love of Marvel's Hercules, where I will grab up any comic he stars or guest stars in. Ya gotta love the big lug/lush!!!!

10. Thor vs Herculesby Kirby/Lee Thor #126 (January 1966) This issue appears MUCH higher on my list. Lets face it, Herc had to be high AND drunk to trade punches with Thor. Herc isn't the most astute muscle flexer in the pose down. I struggled with placing it higher, but since it really was more of a silly/fun type of fight I went with some rumblings which carry more "meaning" to them for the tops of the countdown.

I'm winging it a little - I have a list of 10, but some of them may change as we go if I can think of better options. But we'll start with... 10. X-Men #117 - Professor Xavier vs. the Shadow KingIt was always rare to see Professor Xavier actually do something other than be a jerk who yelled at his "students." So that's why it was extra cool to read this tale form his younger days, where he faced and defeated the evil telepath Amahl Farouk, aka The Shadow King. My favorite part, though, was the ending. Where, after all that fighting, to the people in the physical world, it was just an empty, quiet cafe, where one guy suddenly slumped over. I really liked that.
