Thanks Prince Hal, now I hear Cher in my head singing the theme for this posting: Tropes, Motifs and Themes, we hear it from the people of the town, they call us Tropes, Motives and Themes...everybody comes around to lay their money down...... Otherwise, a truly inspirational subject with lots to explore.

Long a staple of gothic romance/horror book covers, the "woman (or man) running away from the dark house/mansion" has also been a long-lived trope of comics: In fact, The Sinister House of Secret Love #1 (Top row, Left) took its cover (with color alterations) from the novel Lost Lake (1962), while House of Secrets #89 (Bottom row, Left) was an homage to the series of novels based on the Dark Shadows TV series: DC loved this trope during its gothic horror phase of the early 1970s: ...and there's more...

I call these " Action 'Round the Corner" covers, a series of Action Comics covers that reused a composition in which Superman (in one case here, the villain instead) was on the left side of the cover against a wall or other barrier while something interesting was happening 'round the corner on the right side: Then we have the variation in which the "Superman" on the left is a big poster (or in one case, a comic book). Note that in one of these, the "action" is actually the absence of action--interesting by contrast! A sub-variant, in which kids miss seeing the real Superman ' round the corner:
