One must look at Kirby's art in the context of that time, not compared to his spectacular work as the book matured. I recently bought the Tales of Suspense Masterwork on Comixology (99 cents!) Fun little 4-6 page stories, mostly about alien invasion and robots. One thing is clear, with maybe Ditko as the exception, Kirby was by far the best artist at Marvel. His stories just looked better and were more dynamic than the others. So the FF would appeal to Marvel readers for having their best artist. And putting in the Monster/SciFi elements into a book which was also character driven was also a big draw. It was both a traditional Marvel type book and something new and exciting. And Kirby's art was still pretty damn good for that time. Kirby's work stands up to the test of time. Where Swan was focused on the emotional completion of faces in his story telling, Kirby could barely waste time with those details as he set sites on massive sets or far off worlds. It is still astonishing in its breath www.mrbrklyn.com/images/kirby_ditko3.pngwww.mrbrklyn.com/images/kirby_ditko2.pngBTW - this is Ditko inks from Issue 13
