Nope. Mad remained a monthly, on newsstands. We carried it at B&N.
This has been coming, every since Gaines sold to Warner.
With DC editorial running things, it just got worse and now they are going to only offer reprints through subscription and Direct Market. I see that lasting about as long as it takes to fulfill subscriptions and then end. It was doing 140K on newsstands and DC can't manage that with its best titles, consistently. Direct Market only, with nothing new will more than halve that, I'd be willing to bet.
Not too surprising that the people who tried to kill EC finally managed to kill the last remnant of it. Public disinterest was a big part; but, Warner/DC did a lot to foster that disinterest.
The general public reaction seems to be, "Oh, Mad was still around? Hadn't read it in years."
EDIT-Mad was 6 times a year, under DC, whereas it was, generally, 8 times a year, under Gaines. It was quarterly, for a time, after Gaines died and DC started messing with things.

I honestly had no idea they were still putting out a monthly magazine, I really thought it was all just specials like the Summer Movie Review and the End of the Year special. I don't recall the last time I bought either of those, but they're all I ever saw. I must be losing my mind, as I was SURE they'd killed the print version of Mad magazine over a year ago and had since gone digital exclusive. I could have sworn I remembered discussing that here. That's Cracked. Mad closing seems strange to me. Isn't DC happy to sell more than a hundred thousand copies of ANYTHING in this day and age?

Mad Magazine has traditionally had far higher page rates than standard comic books. I'm guessing that they still weren't making money even with the larger circulation.

The cover price was higher They had guest editors, in recent years, including Weird Al Yankovic, in 2014. I think we sold more of that one than usual.

That's sad regardless. The movie parodies were great and specific sections like Spy Vs Spy and the Lighter Side Of were always funny. I still have my box of back issues and collection paperbacks. And no, none of my issues are mint cause all of them have creases in the back cover from trying to see the hidden picture.

You say DC is going to sell these for $ 1 a piece since they're just reprints ? Great ! I think they have a good future ahead of them and kids will start reading them again

Kind of sad. I was never a regular reader of the magazine but I did have a bunch of paperback collections of the comics as a kid. Just a few weeks ago I picked up a TPB of Wally Wood's stuff, which includes many of the strips I remember from those old books. It was great to see them again, although they are now in color which is weird.

Growing up as a kid in the 70's I loved Mag magazine and the fantastic line of paperback reprints they had. Amazing that Cracked has succeeded and lived on as a website. I hated, but I apreciated that others loved it. In summer camp it was everywhere when we were being warehouses in our bunks on raining days. I think that part of what killed it was National Lampoon and the increase in sex within the crank press at the time. Mad didn't complete for whatever reasons, and if it did, it wouldn't have been Mad comics anyway.

Lampoon has been dead and gone for 2 decades.
