I like some of the artwork in these samples but Robin as a character holds even less interest for me than Batman does. But I'll have to keep an eye out for Dustin Nguyen's work and also have a look at what else he<s done in the past. Check out Lemire & Nguyen's creator-owned Image series Decsender and Ascender. -M

Thanks, I'll do that. Glad to hear there's some independant stuff I can check out instead of having to look at Marvel/DC.

Ascender recently had its final issue, so you even have a completed story if you want to read it. (Descender is the first part of the story, Ascender the second part so do start with Descender if you are interested).

The real question is.. why is Robin so short? That does look pretty good, but I'm not sure I need ANOTHER Dick Grayson origin story.

A lot of folks here were raving about Descender when it first came out, which lead to me checking it out and I absolutely adored the series. I've only read the first volume of Ascender (I trade waited on it and fell behind) but the first volume was every bit as good as Descender. The other major series Nguyen is known for is L'il Gotham, which is an alternate take on the Batman mythos skewing for a younger audience with a very stylized depiction of the Gotham crew that might not be for everyone. I find the depictions to be creepy rather than cute, but that's my subjective taste. But L'il Gotham is what I saw first from Nguyen, which was why I was hesitant to buy in on Descender at first despite liking Lemire's other creator-owned stuff I had read at that point. Descender really changed my mind about Nguyen, and I really like his stuff and style now. -M

Decsender is hands down one of my favorite Sci-Fi comics to come out in the last 20 years so well worth checking out. For a horror book with his art he also did American Vampire: Lord of Nightmares and although you've said you don't have a lot of interest in Batman his work with Paul Dini on Streets of Gotham is definitely one of my favorites.

I've been a fan of Nguyen since Wildcats 3.0, which remains one of my favourite series (but I realise that that series was laser targetted at all my issues with superhero comics.
Also liked his Manifest Eternity series, but that was cut short before it ever could go anywhere (though I do feel that some aspects of it have been in Ascender).

Impossible Jones marches onward... Even as those who pledged for physical books in the last campaign (the Imp and Holly Daze team-up) are only getting their copies in the mail now, Karl Kesel has just posted a new Kickstarter for what will be the third Impossible Jones book, another team-up, this time featuring another character from his Impossibleverse, Captain Lightning. Here's the link. It's been up less than a day, and has almost met its $15k funding goal (it was getting close to $14k last time I checked).

Well, he's just a kid. Give him a chance to grow up a little!

So that's two strikes against L'il Gotham for me, though I recognise the artistic ability on display in that cover.
I'm no expert on the DCU, but I didn't realise that Zatanna was considered a Gotham character - or did they just throw her in there because they wanted her? Regardless, I think her inclusion here highlights a problem with these supposedly cute kid versions of characters conceived as adults: the sexy costume with the fishnet stockings, etc is so totally inappropriate for a toddler or whatever they're meant to be, I find it incredible that apparently no one identified this as a problem at any stage in the book's production. It just looks wrong, like those horrifying "baby beauty contests" with little girls wearing lipstick.
But I'm not holding it against Nguyen. Descender v1 is on my list of comics to look for.

Zatanna has been Batman adjacent since she was featured in one of the episodes of Batman: The Animated Series where they featured young Bruce training (escape artistry?) under her father Zatara and having a bond with young Zatanna. That's carried over in the comics to some degree though the specifics have changed. -M

It's more like a chibi inspired art style rather than them really being written like kids as they are in Yale Stewart's excellent JL8

Looks like our global pandemic nd economic crisis is starting to impact release schedules of comics and decisions by publishers what collections to bring out and put into production... article on BCHave to see how this affects short and long term publishing plans by some of these comic companies. It could start pushing some towards more digital releases that circumvent all these issues. -M

Announced at NYCC, Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples Saga returns in 2022. The hiatus was longer than anticipated, but I am happy to hear it is coming back. I will have a longer wait as I read it in trade, but am looking forward to getting the rest of the story.

edit to add: #55 is scheduled to drop at the end of January.
