NWA Hard Times results:
James Storm & Eli Drake won the NWA World Tag titles in a 3-way, over the Rock N Roll Express and Wild Cards. No build up for this match, as they had been concentrating on Ricky Morton vs Nick Aldis for the World title. Storm & Drake cut a promo in support of Morton in the last show; so, this is pretty random.
Thunder Rosa defeats Allysin Kay to win the NWA World Women's title. Pretty much the only result they could have had. Rosa is the star of the women's division and one of the few who gets serious crowd reactions. She's hot, so she will probably hold it for a bit; though, how long "a bit" is, in this ADD world, remains to be seen. Expect a face turn on Melina.
Aron Stevens retains the National title, over Scott Steiner. DQ finish, with Question Mark interfering.
Nick Aldis retains World title, over ROH's Flip Gordon-no surprise there. Marty Scurll was there and forces it to be a title match, as it starts out as non-title. Advancing their angle.
TV Title tournament:
First Round- Trevor Murdoch defeats Question Mark Dan Maff defeats Zicky Dice Ricky Starks defeats Matt Cross Tim Storm advances on a bye, as Ken Anderson no-shows.
Round Two: Trevor Murdoch defeats Dan Maff Ricky Starks defeats Tim Storm
Finals: Ricky Starks defeats Trevor Murdoch to become the NWA World Television champion. From a booking logic standpoint, this makes no sense. Although they have been pushing Starks, their last episode had Starks pull an ambush on Aron Stevens. The logical move is that Starks and Stevens feud over the National title. So, why put the tv belt on Stevens if they are going to feud for the other title? it ties up two belts and they are too small an organization to have someone be a dual champion. Made more sense for Murdoch to win and Starks to face Stevens for the National title, in the near future.
They announce the next Crockett cup, which means tag team tournament. Last time, the show featured Aldis regaining the World title from Cody Rhodes and the tournament included Ring of Honor teams. Interesting to see how it goes this time.

I hope to see this at some point, but as it may be a while, I've read your results. When is the Crockett Cup? I checked Wikipedia, but they have no page/date yet for Crockett Cup.

I hope to see this at some point, but as it may be a while, I've read your results. When is the Crockett Cup? I checked Wikipedia, but they have no page/date yet for Crockett Cup. The next PPV is in April (I want to say April 22; but don't quote me). They said it will be a bigger venue, which suggest it may be a co-promotion with ROH, like it was at NWA 70, when they held the last crockett Cp and the Aldis/Cody rematch. That gives them nearly 3 months to build angles to something bigger. They might also slip another "pop-up event" in there. Coming out of theis PPV, I really think they need to review their booking decisions and plan longer term. These first two "seasons" of Powerrr have mostly been about introducing wrestlers and their match philosophy and show style. Now that fans know who most of these guys are, we need to build storylines, beyond Nick Aldis and whoever. You have 3 men's singles titles and a tag title, and a women's title. That's a lot of wardrobe to fight over, with not enough people to be in the mix. They just built up heat for Stevens vs Starks, with the logical aim being Starks chasing him for the National title and winning it. However, they put the tv title on Starks. So, that puts champion after champion. That's not a good booking mix. Better to have Murdoch win it and be an Arn Anderson type, while Stevens and Starks play Bugs Bunny and Yosemite Sam. Murdoch builds a rep of taking on anyone and everyone and continuing through sheer skill, guts and toughness. The crowd loves him, he can work a brawling and a technical style; it fits. They lack a lot of logic for many of their PPV matches and some of the tv angles. Allysin Kay, the champion, had to beat a different person, for the right to defend her title against Thunder Rosa. WFT? Why is the champ doing anything other than picking their opponent or facing the number one contender? it makes no sense. It makes more sense of Thunder Rosa had to defeat someone to earn a shot at the title. It's all backwards. James Storm and Eli Drake are all buddy-buddy now, with nothing to connect them. Both are playing the tweener card. That's about it. Quite frankly, Storm is the better promo of the two and the better all-'round worker. He should be vying for singles glory, in my opinion. Tag titles should be for more concrete teams, like the Dawsons, RNR Express, Wild Cards, etc. I think Lagana and Corgan spent a little too much time around bad booking. They should ring up Corny and Dutch Mantell and get some lessons on booking logic. All that said, the tv show is entertaining; but, now its time to build on it and make the promotion mean something long term, which is allegedly Corgan's plan. I am glad to hear they are using a bigger venue for the Crockett Cup, as they need to get the PPVs in an arena setting and not just the GPBS studios. It makes them look small time.

Despite being a subscriber to the WWF Network, I think I might buy this DVD: There's a March 1991 bout between Piper and Mr. Perfect. Gotta see that!

We've had volumes for unreleased matches (general), unreleased Savage, unreleased Piper - and isn't an unreleased Shawn Michaels DVD on the way?
I'd love to see an "Unreleased" volume for Jake Roberts!

If they want "unreleased," try their matches outside the WWF. Piper's actual matches were light years better in Mid-Atlantic and Georgia, as he spent more time as a mouthpiece in the WWF than actually in the ring. He had to actually work more competitively in those territories. He got a few chances to show what he could do in the WWF; but usually didn't do much mat wrestling, at which he was very good.
For Shawn, you would mostly have tag-team stuff, as the Midnight Rockers, in the AWA (since the WWF doesn't have Memphis footage) and you wouldn't see his early stuff, since the WWF doesn't own either the central States stuff or the Southwest Championship Wrestling and Houston stuff. Michaels was a rookie sensation in Southwest and worked some cards in Houston, for Paul Boesch (who booked some of the Southwest people). he then went to Kansas City, before he and Marty Jannetty were put together as the Midnight Rockers.
Jake Roberts would give you all kinds of stuff, which they do have. They own the Mid-South, Florida, Mid-Atlantic and Crockett libraries; so, all they would be missing was his Georgia stuff, prior to Black Saturday (and that stuff was gold!).
Unfortunately, for Savage, little to nothing exists before memphis. There are just a handful of matches from ICW and only one or two things from Gulas. Nothing still seems to exist of his earlier work in Georgia or his time in the Maritimes, before Angelo started up ICW.

Rick Rude Unreleased would be another dream DVD, depending on what footage they had/could access.

Rick Rude Unreleased would be another dream DVD, depending on what footage they had/could access. The WWE would have his time there, the WCW footage, his time in Crockett, his stuff in Florida, his time in World Class, and his brief stint in Mid-South. Only things missing would be Georgia (as a rookie) and Memphis (where he developed into a real talent, before going to World Class). WCW was him at his absolute best, in the ring and on the mic, before he injured his back.

He was stellar in WCW. Jake Roberts once said, "It's the man that makes the title, not the title that makes the man." Rude brought such prestige to the United States Championship. And as cumbersome, unwieldy and redundant as the WCW International World Heavyweight Championship was, he brought prestige to that.
I'm sorry that he retired due to injury. Yes, that does leave fond memories of his in-ring work, but I wonder what might have been had he continued. Of course, with Hogan on the way in to WCW, Rude could have become redundant like so many others did.

I do hope to watch Steve Austin's podcast interview with Undertaker soon. It's been rare over 30 years to see 'Taker out of character, so I am hoping for some great insight (but with a near-30-year WWF career, they'll no doubt have a lot to cover!).

NWA Powerrr Ep 16, "Dealer vs Villain" Recap of Marty Scurll turning up at Hard Times, cutting a promo, Flip Gordon's match turned into title shot, Aldis wins and gets to dictate terms for facing Marty at Crocket Cup, in April. Former WWF announcer Sean Mooney joins the NWA broadcast team and talks to Aldis, who yaps for a bit. Recap of the end of the tag title 3-Way, at Hard Times, with Eli Drake pinning Ricky Morton and Drake & Storm becoming new tag champs. Sal Ranauro at the desk with a broken arm, helping on commentary. Royce Isaacs comes out with a $20 piece of a.....I mean May Valentine, to take on Andre Gunn, some rookie who is not related to Billy Gunn (he's African-American, for a start). Ranauro calls Isaacs neutered, during commentary and he leaves the ring to jack his jaw at Sal, nearly getting himself counted out. May has words with Sal as Isaacs gets back in the ring and gets a pin, then throws off his wristbands and makes threats at Sal and yammers at May. Is that a whip crack I hear in the background? Recap of Thunder Rosa defeating Allysin Kay for the Women's title. TR out to talk to Kyle Davis, then Melina and Marti Belle join and Melina takes over conversation, taking credit, yadda yadda yadda. Building to TR's face turn. ps. Why does every female wrestler in the company dress like a stripper/hooker in their street clothes? Recap of Eddie Kingston at Hard Times, getting laid out by the Dawsons, as Pope looks on. No idea where this is going (Pope as Dawsons manager?). Kingston and Homicide are dime-a-dozen indie guys who watched too much ECW. Dawsons are a good tag team. Pope has moments but this really isn't developing. Recap of the unveiling and announcement for the Crockett Cup, at the April PPV. They mention that it will take place in a bigger venue. Recap of Ricky Starks in the tournament and winning the World TV title. He comes out for a promo, calls out Zicky Dice, who proceeds to illustrate what a bad shopper he is by saying he paid a total of $26,500 for about $25 worth of cheap sunglasses, feather earring and vinyl fanny pack. He also had ugly trunks and bad tattoos; but, that's another story. Starks calls for a match and defends the belt and wins. Dice still wrestles like a jobber (where's Chick Donovan when you need him?) (The Golden Boy, about to look up at the lights.) Bennett mentions that the TV title is on the line each week and 7 successful title defenses, including going the distance, automatically earns a World title shot. Drake and Storm out for tomfoolery and catch phrases. Interruption provided by Aron Stevens (with a ridiculously long karate black belt) and Question Mark. Some entertaining back and forth then James Storm breaks out the 3rd grade jokes (knock-knock jokes and interrupting cows). He and Drake go hang by the crowd as Trevor Murdoch comes out and tells Aron that he is defending the National title next week, against him. QM hits a Mongrovian Spike to Trevor's throat and leaves him laying. Okay, so, we have Ricky Starks ambush Aron Stevens, on the last episode and win the TV title, which makes no sense as he should by chasing the National title. Murdoch loses the finals for the TV belt, but gets a shot at the National title, with no set up. What's wrong with this booking picture? Hint, the wong guy won the tv title and is chasing the National title. Recap of Aldis vs Gordon. Sit down pre-tape between Aldis and Scurll that does Scurll no favors and is boring as hell. neither is good enough to carry this kind of thing as a two-actor scene. Stick with promos guys and let an experienced interviewer lead this kind of thing. Kind of a mixed show. These are taped after the PPV, so they have a bit of filler. They did 3 title changes, which is a bit much for a small company. Booking in and out of this past PPV is all over the place. Need to get soe focus going here, guys. Booking logic is shot to hell. Matches are still pretty entertaining and Storm & Drake jacking with Stevens and QM was pretty good, though Drake can only contribiute his Rock Lite mush, while Storm teaches him how to do it, off the top, with character, not reliance on catch phrases (though he breaks out his "Sorry 'bout your damn luck!" phrase.) The tag title match had a decent ending, with Drake and Storm paying homage to the RnR Express, with Storm laying down his belt in front of Morton and bowing to him. Nice bit of respect for the uys who redefines tag team wrestling (with the Midnight Express). Seriously, the women are all dressed like ladies of negotiable affection. The guys have a mix of stylish and wrestler casual. It just looks bad, if you ask me; but, then again, I'm old. You want to be taken seriously as athletes and performers, don't dress like you do lap dances for a living.

David Benoit, Chris' son with his first wife, is trying to break in to wrestling and wants to use the name Chris Benoit Jr. Jim Cornette was asked about this on the Drive-Thru and I agree with his response. David Benoit will be hard enough. if he has desire and talent, fine, wrestle. But, let that name lie. Corny said they could do a hell of an angle, if he developed into a major talent, where he strives to redeem the benoit name. That would be storytelling gold. However, like Brian Last said, I can't watch a Benoit match or see a picture of him and not think "murderer." It's bad enough he killed his wife and himself, but a small child just isn't something you just let go.
I think the kid has a long hill to climb to ever be a star and the main people who will be willing to use him will do so for cheap tabloid heat.

Corny said they could do a hell of an angle, if he developed into a major talent, where he strives to redeem the benoit name. I feel that would be a mistake and in poor taste. No-one should suffer for the sins of their father. It will be hard. There may be trolls who target him via social media and the like. It will be an uphill battle. But I don't think it should be part of an angle or storyline in any way, shape or form.

No-one should suffer for the sins of their father. It will be hard. There may be trolls who target him via social media and the like. It will be an uphill battle. But I don't think it should be part of an angle or storyline in any way, shape or form. That's kind of Corny's point. Using the name Benoit has enough of a burden to carry, no matter what. Using Chris Benoit Jr (which isn't his given name) has no upside and no reputable company will touch it, no matter how good he is. The problem is there is no way. in the internet age, to keep his identity hidden, and he looks too much like his father. Corny suggested, in the old days, he could have wrestled uner a mask, for a while, as local football players used to do it all the time, to moonlight, without fans knowing who they were. Today, you'd have wrestlers tweeting photos of him backstage, putting on the mask. Corny basically said he should have the chance, if he really wants it and has the aptitude; but, the name will always work against him and it will be sleazy exploiters who will most give him a chance. He said if he made enough of a name for himself on his own, possibly using another name; then, as a major draw he could do a program where he talks about his family name and how he is striving to redeem it for the innocents who have had to carry the burden (like he and his sister, Megan). Personally, I think that idea is a pretty big longshot and would require David to become a star using an alternate name, with no reference to his father, ever. I think, if he had not gone public with that intention, trained quietly, wrestled under a ring name and developed, no one would have got the connection, other than maybe saying he looked like Chris Benoit, once in a while. People don't automatically think that someone is related, just because they look like someone else; but, when you say people are related, then other people start looking for the resemblance. This is David, with Chris Jericho... You can see Chris in him; but he isn't exactly the spitting image of him. He could wrestle without the name, not talk to the press and never mention it, while he evolves as a performer, and it might never reach the fans. However, I saw at least one photo, from The Sun,; so tabloids would expose it, if they got wind of him working a show, just to sell papers or get website hits. I feel sorry for the kid; to have to carry that name, when he has done nothing wrong and his father's mental deterioration led to such horrible tragedy. Me, I wouldn't set foot in a wrestling show, let alone a ring; but, I didn't row up with it.
