He did a lot of Richie Rich, Casper, and I knew him through Harvey Comics exclusively. My dear friend, Jeff who ran a comic book store met him once and Jeff had a terrific time with him.

Really sad. Enjoyed lots of Colon's work from child to adult! So much varied goodness over the years. You will be missed Ernie...

Colon also did an entire series of "Bank Street Classics" (adapting classic novels into a mere 16 comic-book pages) for BOY'S LIFE magazine in the 1990s. Some of them involved quite stunning full-color painted art.

To whatever extent a reader can really say someone was a "good editor", I'd say he was a good editor. I tended to enjoy most of what was released under his editorship at DC, and always liked his approach to the letters page.
And yeah, very engaging and distinctive artist. Colon bridged the adventure/humor style gap in a way that I found much more satisfying than, say, Joe Staton.

I do remember the letters pages he would oversee at DC were... bizarre.

Colon apparently spent HALF his career working for Harvey, doing RICHIE RICH and CASPAR THE FRIENDLY GHOST. But the other half, doing all knds of other things. Insanely... my first exposure to his work was in the very 1st Warren horror mag I ever bought... EERIE #33 from 1971. Here's a message board page with 3 PAGES from his story in there posted... it's some of the CRAZIEST S*** I've ever seen!!! link

Sad day. Damn good artist, able to draw anything. he excelled at fantasy and horror and bigfoot cartooning. When I was stationed in Charleston, SC, in the Navy, my local's owner had a sketch of himself, as Richie Rich, done by Colon. At that point, I had been unaware that he had done work at Harvey, since they didn't always credit the art. I just knew him from DC and Marvel.
Thanks for all the great stories and art!

Sad news. I loved when he did Magnus for Valiant. For several issues he not only drew it, but hand colored it with watercolor and colored pencil. Beautiful art, which I am sure was to intensive to sustain. But wonderful while it lasted.

I was a big fan of Colón’s work. Loved Arak, Amerhyst and The Grim Ghost. One of those artists who was excellent in any genre. I remember him being an editor for a short time, but honestly don’t recall what books he edited.
R.I.P.

I just remembered that I had some online interaction with Ernie back in about 1993 on the Compuserve comics forums...when he mistakenly thought I was his colleague and former collaborator comics writer Michael Gallagher. Oh, and I also remembered that I quite liked the DC Graphic Novel he wrote and drew, The Medusa Chain. A versatile, multi-talented man, indeed. There can't be many more comic artist veterans of the 60's still with us now. Frank Thorne, Frank Bolle, Joe Giella, Joe Sinnott, who else?
