See I'm English and a huge football fan (an even bigger football fan than I am a comics fan) but I've never read Roy of the Rovers. I've read about it and hearing about the soap opera elements of the comic kind of turned me off it a bit. You dodged a bullet. It was boll*cks.

I probably just have Ranger mixed up with some similar word like Scorcher. I know there was a Warrior comic but it wasn't football. A strip in Valiant or Victor? Maybe it was even just a fictional team mentioned on a cover or something. I see there was a late '80s parody of Roy titled Ray Of The Rangers, but that wasn't it either.

My favourite football strip when I was a kid was Action's Play Till You Drop, about a player in the old first division who was being blackmailed by a sleazy journalist named Grice. link

John Wagner and Alan Grant wrote a comic a few years ago about an alien footballer, Rok of the Reds, the working title for which was Rom of the Rovers.
