Okay, so here are the LotDK stories I think I'll probably still read and potentially cover in this thread: Destroyer goes across Batman, Detective and LODK, so you can't skip that issue. "Heat" is a follow-up to "Prey". Not quite up to the standard of "Prey", but still very good. Sanctum is a must...I mean it doesn't connect to any story in Batman or Detective but it's only one issue and it's seriously one of my favorite Batman stories of all time. I'd have to say that Faith (21-23) is essential if you feel that Batman's relationship with Leslie Thompkins is essential. We've already seen how Bruce Wayne's interaction with her began - Faith reveals how Batman entered into the mix. I also regard it as a pretty good story and it is a three-parter as opposed to the more unwieldly (for threads such as these) five-parters. Thanks for the feedback. Still open to more! |

For me, the one shots from Legends of the Dark Knight were my favorites and aside from Sanctum I really liked "Sunset" by Tom Joyner which was a great homage to Sunset Boulevard, "Citadel" by James Robinson and "Urban Legend" by Bill Willingham. But I suppose that if you're only going to partake of one of these little asides,(other than Sanctum you need to read that!) it should be "Stories" by Michael T. Gilbert which is like a history lesson of the many faces of Batman.

First I've heard of this. More info? Just guessing, but I think he's referring to bonus insert comics that were included throughout the DC line. It's not a separate comic, it would be inside one of the existing issues. A quick google reveals that Detective #589 had one, for instance. That's the one - Thanks Crimebuster! |

Going Sane is definitely worth reading, one of the better LotDK story arcs. I really like Hothouse, too, for its rather different take on Poison Ivy, and great art by P. Craig Russel. Terminus is a cool Delano/Bachalo one-shot that I'm really fond of. Of course, due to the nature of the title, these stories mostly aren't "essential".
But Blades is my favourite LotDK story arc - in fact, it might be my favourite Batman story of the 90s, next to DK,DC.

Dirty Tricks (95-97) by Abnett and Lanning was good. I liked the direction it seemed to be going but what was really going on was much different. I know I have Stories and Citadel but I guess I'll have to read them again. I remember Citadel's premise but not much of the details. Edit: All this talk is giving me the bug to read them again, and fill in some of the holes in the series I have up to when I had to drop comics all together around #150. |

It really is beautiful. If it weren't for Hothouse I am not sure if I would have ran into much of Mr Russell's work as it so sporadic and sprinkled all over comicdom.

Please tell me you've read his Elric stuff. So far just the GN from First. I picked it up with some issues from Marvel and DC graphic novel series. The art is indeed beautiful in there too. But it's one of those, at least then, overwhelming series since it was all over the place kind of. I'll look through your list in the link and add them to my want list to keep my eye out for them. Sword and sorcery I can enjoy. It's just not my go to. And I thought I remember a good story in a few issues of either Epic Illustrated or Rook that he did. I do remember it was a magazine size book, and those two are the ones I have the most of. But dang if I can remember much about the story. Just a few images still in my head. I'll have to look and see if I can figure it out when I get home. |
