I saw Dirty Dancing over the weekend. I had a good time ridiculing it. I was texting my friends who were making fun of me because of all the essential 1980s movies I’ve never seen.

I didn’t get to Commando until last night. It’s hilarious! I was laughing out loud, at Arnold’s quips and the over-the-top action scenes, and also it was just so darn silly at times.
Right up there with Red Heat, Conan the Destroyer and Red Sonja as my favorite Schwarzenegger movie.

Is there a collected volume(s) of the comics featured in this thread that offer a straight forward reading?
I know there's collections that group runs by different creators, and I know possibly Showcase Presents might catch-up to this era (albeit in B&W), but I'd love just a single "go to" for these stories presented in a sensible reading order.

I know there's collections that group runs by different creators, and I know possibly Showcase Presents might catch-up to this era (albeit in B&W), but I'd love just a single "go to" for these stories presented in a sensible reading order. Well you're essentially talking about anywhere between four and eight different eras, and I'm not aware of any of them having been reprinted in full. However, I'm certain the following have been collected: Dark Knight Returns Year One Year Two Ten Nights of the Beast Death in the Family Year Three Lonely Place of Dying Robin Robin II There is probably more that I'm not aware of. They really need to do a collected edition of the Moench run, if for no other reason than showcasing the artwork of Gene Colan, Don Newton, and Alfredo Alcala. Stunning stuff. |

Yes! I agree. Even if I could get my hands on a chronological reprint volume of just the Moench stuff I'd be thrilled.

DC has released writer-centric volumes of pre-Crisis Batman material which gives you some stuff, but you'll still have empty slots if you're looking for something straightforwardly chronological. Tales of the Batman: Gerry Conway Vol 1 for instance, will give you Detective Comics 497-504 minus 500 (plus a few other odds and ends); Vol 2 contains Batman 337-346 and Detective 505-513. Tales of the Batman: Gene Colan Vol has Batman 340, 343-345, 348-351 as well as a handful of Detective issues from that time; Vol 2 includes Detective 530-538, and 540-544. There are other volumes out there of various writers (I think Len Wein has one; Jim Aparo has at least one) so you could look into that, but nothing that consistently gives you one issue after another a la the Archives. |

Sheesh! I am so glad I was reading these issues while they were being published! I was a sporadic Batman reader for a time, but when I re-read the series (not for the first time) about 2010, I had about 70% of the issues from Detective 500 to 580 and Batman 340 to 420 (or so), and I decided it was time to get them all! (I was missing the first Jason Todd though. I must have bid on ten or fifteen copies before I got one that wasn’t an arm and a leg.) One of my favorite runs ever! |

One of my favorite runs ever! Totally agree. In fact, I find myself more and more tempted these days to stop what I'm currently reading and dive back into this run again. Batman #307 straight up to #400, and the corresponding 'Tec issues. |

Actually have my issues of Batman/Detective during this time which I bought new. Sitting in a long box (one the thieves left me, thank you) pulled aside so when the Bat Itch strikes me, I will bury myself under all those great stories again. Haven't read any of them since purchasing so will be fun seeing what I remember and what is "new" to me and my foggy old brain. |
