(sigh) you win, thwhtguardian ... Batman #428: Robin Lives! (February 2024) Yeah, I have to say, more than anything else I think the ads fascinated me the most. Are they considered fair use due to their age? I've never bought any of the other facsimle editions that have cropped up in the last few years, anyone know if they also reproduce the original ads?

It's still a for profit book, so you'd think DC would need permission to reprint the ads...but perhaps because the companies in question paid for these ads to be in this book once upon a time they can be reprinted? I might have to see if anyone at DC would respond to an email about it.

Just came across this very interesting longform interview with Doug Moench. While most of it concerns his Marvel years, toward the end he discusses aspects of his time on Batman (both runs) and the abrupt termination of his initial run under new editor Denny O'Neil. Also a nice sidelight on Gerry Conway's Batman run.

Also a nice sidelight on Gerry Conway's Batman run. Thanks! I'll check this out. It's rare to find interviews where Moench is asked to discuss his first Batman run. Interviewers think to ask about the high profile stuff like Moon Knight, Godzilla, Planet of the Apes, and (of course) Knightfall, but never Blackmask, Killer Croc, Nocturna, and Jason Todd.

Apropos recent discussion of 'Death in the Family' and creator interviews, there is plenty to sink your teeth into in this oral history of the killing of Jason Todd, which includes original and re-published reflections from a variety of creators including Gerry Conway, Frank Miller, Jim Starlin, Max Alan Collins, Denny O'Neil, etc. The Lives and Death of Robin: An Oral History of A DEATH IN THE FAMILYThe bin fire that was O'Neil's editorial reign is on full display here ... what I did not expect was Jim Starlin to emerge as a patsy to a flawed editorial vision.
