Trailer makes this seem to be a Harley Quinn movie and the others are just extra's tagging along for the ride. And from the trailer you have no idea of who is who! No character names given or provided at all. Why even call it Birds of Prey when you are going to shove Harley down our throats?

I remember when Ewan McGregor used to make good films. Should have stuck with Danny Boyle.
And, oh joy, Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya.
So, yeah; gonna watch Brave & the Bold, instead, where the Birds of Prey were done well.

Modern film trailers SUCK. I can't remember the last time I went to see a film based on the trailer - word of mouth, reviews & who made the film is what draws me in these days. So this trailer stinks but I'll decide on if I go or not based on the reviews and word of mouth. And yeah, obviously this was not a trailer directed at comic book fans, so judging the movie on that is kinda short sighted to me.

New trailer out
I had been moderately interested in this one after reading the pieces in the film comics about it (Total Film and Empire), but that trailer just looks like a dumpster fire in a toxic waste dump, so my expectations are down to Suicide Squaad levels now

Robie’s Harley looks and acts like she stepped straight out of the Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti comics.
I can’t wait.

This is projected to have a much lower opening weekend.. in the 30 millions... than any other DC film of the past while. Green Lantern, Aquaman, Shazam, and the Lego Batman movie were not set-the-world-on-fire hits, but they opened with more than 50 million.
It beat the Losers and Jonah Hex, I guess.
I figured this landed aesthetically between Joker, Deadpool, and Wonder Woman and would do pretty well. Maybe it's a little too Batman and Robin looking? I heard it strays really, really far from the source material and maybe general audiences picked up on that even though they don't read comics?
And out-and-out superhero comic based film flops have been damned rare in the 2010s. I can only think of Fantastic Four and Dark Phoenix. Justice League made a lot of money but also cost a lot, lot of money, so that might count.

so very good. . much better than I had hoped it would be.
here's my comments on it that I posted on FB:
*really* liked "Birds of Prey". . oh, it had a few missed opportunities where it could have been stronger.
and it did annoy me that at least one main character is that comic character in name only (a 2nd character is in a similar situation and it was annoying the heck out of me, until the rectified it late in the film and she basically became the comic version).
but any flaw forgiven by the awesome Meta commentary included in the film (no spoilers, but it COMPLETELY won me over during an exchange between Black Canary and Montoya during the climactic battle. . when they commented *on screen* about something I had just wondered about. . LOL).
Really good and highly recommended

Something seems missing from Huntress............................... Oh right, a mask. THAT issue resolved by end of film
as are the concerns about Black Canary simply being a street fighter

Really liked the Harley Quinn...oops, excuse me, my mistake...the Birds of Prey movie. Great street level movie full of what makes a movie entertaining. Good strong characters, actors/actresses having fun doing the movie, wicked stunts/fights (waddaya expect from the John Wick crew?), awesome music and you get away from the real world for 2 hours. Everything you want from a movie. And there was a good assortment of folks from teens to old fogeys like me in attendance with around 30 people in seats for the 1st showing on Saturday. And while I read the movie is doing poorly in sales, that 30 is still around 20 more than ANY other movie i have been to in January or February so far. Personally, I mark it down to bad advertising/promotional work and the decline of people going out for a movie anymore unless it is some big mind-blowing summer juggernaut. Smaller, less budgeted movies are making the cut anymore it seems with the standard Hollywood weekend big pay-off demand anymore. Where movies could build up sales with word of mouth and repeat viewings, everything is all based now upon that INITIAL weekend sales.
Back to the movie! Margot Robbie OWNS Harley in the same way Ryan Reynolds owns Deadpool. There is just NOBODY who can or will ever play the character as well afterwards. Harley actually gains some strong character insights and becomes less the pain in the butt over-utilized character from the comic books. The other characters you may know the names but probably NOT recognize as they are not bigger name characters and they are NOT in recognizable costumes. Which emphasizes that they are PEOPLE first as they grow into becoming a team of heroes by the end. There are multiple tip of the hats to various renditions of Quinn from the last few years in the comics and all are brought to life in exquisite style and humor and fun. MacGregor's Black Mask is uniquely different as far as crime lords go and I do think he could have had a better showing against the Birds in the end rather than just being the ring leader in charge. Once they come along within the movie and are given enough face time Montoya, Canary and Huntress grow on you and their inter-actions together will make for a superb team. The 3 of them might even make old stone face Batman crack a smile.
Hoping for more BOP in the future because these dark alley Angels kick butt and entertain all at the same time!
