Who would win a fight, the Hulk or ____? It doesn't matter who he's matched against, I always answer "Hulk". I recently wondered why. Thor is a god renowned for his strength among other gods, even. Superman used to be able to juggle planets. Why do I think gamma-powered strength should be the last word in power? Why should I be so loyal to Hulk's might? And then it hit me: "Hulk is the strongest one there is!" "Hulk will smash you all!" I've heard these boasts hundreds of times. I've been taken in by a braggart!
Worse, since this epiphany, I still can't conceive of removing Hulk from my number one spot. Mission accomplished, salad-head.

Worse, since this epiphany, I still can't conceive of removing Hulk from my number one spot. Mission accomplished, salad-head. My problem with the Hulk ... in the way I see it is the fact that Hulk in some way shape or form gets tired and can't keep on rampaging and eventually revert to Bruce Banner. Once he revert to Bruce Banner ... he is powerless and then you kill Banner and the Hulk at the same time. Think about that for the moment ...

My understanding is that physical attacks only make him angrier and stronger. Under that definition, no one should be able to defeat him with brawn. The standard solution should be throwing him into space where he has no leverage to which his strength can be applied.

It had the opposite effect on me: the whole idea of the Hulk or anyone else being categorically "the strongest one there is" in the MU is a bad one and weakens the character, in my view.

IMO Thor should be able to beat Hulk. Hulk may be stronger but Thor has more powers at his disposal.

IMO Thor should be able to beat Hulk. Hulk may be stronger but Thor has more powers at his disposal. I don’t think that’s ever been up for debate, but I do agree. Thor fully utilizing Mjolnir should beat the Hulk every time, but the Hulk is physically stronger and tougher than Thor.

I think it comes down to the specialist rule: the Flash gets to be the fastest and the Hulk gets to be the strongest since they are all about speed and strength. Superman, Thor and the Silver Surfer can do virtually everything, and are overall more powerful primarily because of their versatility and scope.

The standard solution should be throwing him into space where he has no leverage to which his strength can be applied. I always just assumed there was some upper limit, though. It's interesting to see where everyone draws their suspension-of-disbelief lines. I think it's just common sense that there is an upper (yet ridiculously high) limit to Hulk's strength, no matter how angry he gets. Of course, there's nothing "common sense" about any of this.

I am a total supporter of Hulk's political agenda: HULK SMASH!!! I'm not sure if you are alluding to this or just being silly, but I was very aware of a parallel or two which could be drawn between my OP and the current... predicament of a certain (former?) global super-power.

Superman, Thor and the Silver Surfer can do virtually everything, and are overall more powerful primarily because of their versatility and scope. I like the sound of that: "the specialist rule". For this reason, I always did think the Flash should have the edge over Superman in speed, but I didn't consider applying the same logic to Hulk and strength. I don't feel so ashamed to remain in Mister "How many times do I have to tell you I'm the strongest one there is?"'s corner now. Thanks!

Pre-Crisis Superman because he was basically unlimited in strength.

Pre-Crisis Superman because he was basically unlimited in strength. 200 quintillion tons = 200,000,000,000,000,000,000 tons ... see panel below. I agree with you that Pre-Crisis Superman is amazingly super-strong ...

It's a good thing that floor under Superman can absorb the force of 200 quintillion tons being transmitted through his body! Dr. Quintum works some serious mojo on his moon base.
For reference, the mass of the earth is in the neighborhood of 5,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 tons, or 25 times more than Superman was pushing against.

But Popeye is "strong to the finish" 'cause he eats his spinach! Popeye vs. Hulk I'm betting on Popeye, he's like George Foreman in his '40s and would be the last guy standing. Iron Man won against the Hulk once... it was a split decision of sorts though... "Iron Man Has Finally Beaten The Hulk":
