Looking at some of the earliest comics in my own reading history, I see a lot of the ones I have the greatest nostalgia for don't have great covers, but this one does:

20cent DCs, treasury tabloid DCs, 20 and 25cent Gold Key (Scamp and Chip N' Dale anyway), and 35 and 40 cent Marvels tend to hit the nostalgia button for me. I remember just seeing the cover of The Shadow #1 in a house ad and being very struck by that Kaluta cover!

First comic I ever got; it was in a Whitman 3 pack. The other two were Bugs Bunny and a Road Runner. The one and only comic my mom ever bought me. Wow it's Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman from the Super Friends ! I remember my friend Ronnie sneaking this into class and having to be sneaky to buy it from him. What a cover ! I knew Aquaman wasn't dead, at lease not dead forever, but I had to read this. My cousin Danny had this, the first solo Superman comic I'd ever seen. A Batman Family ? Batman has a family ! There's Batgirl ! We saw here on Batman ! What is going on ? Must buy.

Thanks dbutler69. More on the way as I can remember them. The Last Angry God is one of my favorite stories. The 100 Page JLA Book.

Yeah, I saw that, Mecha, we both had the same comic listed !
Wanted to get something else, but my dad was kind of interested in this issue, and he was buying, so this was it. He would read Tarzan or Conan; he never once read any superhero comics though I did get him to read Elfquest years later, though he didn't like it as much as the other two.
This was my first Kubert and so powerful ! Again, notice the Family theme. This resonated strongly with me, the group of characters as a family. We'll definitely being seeing more Family appearances later.
Korak, son of Tarzan, whom I had never heard of before, fitting a shark underwater ! I can still see panels of that story in my memory.
This is the first Marvel I ever bought. Lots of stuff going on here including Captain America, a childhood favorite, Nazis, U-Man (who the heck is that), and especially the Human Torch throwing that line of fireballs and melting the gun. Thought the only Kirby was a vacuum back then, but what a cover, so Must Buy !
Super-Team (yup you guessed it) Family # 3
Julie Schwartz was right; I'm a sucker for apes, gorillas, chimps, etc, and I've always liked Hawkman, so this cover was like a magnet to me.
Superman (are you tired of this yet) Family # 175
Nothing extraordinary about this issue, but even back then I liked the bigger format and more than a single story; Decent Schaffenberger art.
My friend Jeff later sold me his comic book stash at one point and this was one of the issues in the deal (I think Jeff's dad, a Lit teacher at the high school, was actually buying and reading these and passing these on to his son; closet reader).
Wow what a powerful cover !
I was completely lost in the story, but what beautiful art here by Buckler and Janson, one of my favorite inkers; also, Deathlok, one of the last great Bronze Age characters IMO.

hondobrode, at least your dad read some comics. That's cool.
And yeah, I'm a sucker for talking apes myself.
And Deathlok, while not a character that I got into, is one of those characters that I do strongly associate with the Bronze Age, like Man-Thing, Howard the Duck, Hellcat, and Tigra, to name a few. In fact, that might be a topic for its own thread - who is the most quintessential Bronze Age character?

I'm someone in the house ad camp. In the last few years I've bought many of the old comics I had as a kid, and when I flip through them and see a particular house ad it's my madeleine. I'm instantly transported to a very happy and magical time of my life. In particular I loved the house ads for DC Giants as with these Superboy issues. I was entranced by the fact there were several episodes or stories contained in these (reminded me of the Wendy and Casper Giants that I'd loved earlier). Also, I loved seeing characters outside the Superman-Batman gang and I remember being very curious about Mon-El. What kind of name was that for a superhero? Why was he dressed in a costume with a color scheme that reversed Superboy's? The thing is, I never actually read these specific issues, I just loved them from afar in the house ads...then as now.

Good point, Farrar. I do love seeing those house ads, and that reminds me that even seeing those old Hostess ads where Spidey or somebody would capture some supervillain I've never heard of with the help of Twinkies bring back some nostalgia.

Here's a house ad for those wonderful treasury sized comics. Loved those!
