This thread had no deep meaning. It's just Shang Chi's interaction with the police in his original run From Special Marvel Edition #16

Well, both panel samples show police officers as being utterly intolerant and politically slanted, along with the fat and/or old white cop stereotype. It would be interesting to see all of this title's use of police officers to get the bigger picture of possible differences in characterization--if that happened.

From Master Of Kung Fu #90 I think of that scene whenever I’m in that situation (with no officer present, naturally). Beyond the humour of it, it illustrates an important point: that laws should be in the service of the people, and not the other way around.

I noticed this once before with someone else and it was twitter. I'm probably missing a widget or plug-in of some sort that makes them work. The links all work though, thanks. In the first two the cops mistake Shang-Chi for a hippie, in the last one I think I agree with the cop! Some people cross streets slowly and sometimes a vehicle can seem to appear from nowhere... maybe if officer friendly knew Shang-Chi abilities he might agree with him, but he doesn't. Of course a vehicle could ignore the lights and hit a pedestrian, it's not like lights and lines on pavement will actually do something to stop that. I have seen people ticketed for jaywalking, but then police often see a person hit by traffic at least once in a year.

It would be interesting to see all of this title's use of police officers to get the bigger picture of possible differences in characterization--if that happened. Doug Mench was an outspoken critic of the police. As I understand it, it was less a specific criticism lodged at a specific department, and more of a "Who watches the watchers?" outlook on law and order. I have no doubt that influenced his writing once he took over the reigns on Master of Kung Fu.

Stick it to the man, Shang Chi! Yeah! Damn The Man! He can’t keep Shang Chi down. Actually, has it ever been stated in the comics that Shang has US citizenship? I can't remember. If NOT, then The Man CAN lock him up and deport him. Especially as all the scenes depicted so far are about American Police, it might well be THEY are in the right and it is Shang who is in the wrong. And a slight aside: Shang must have some really strong (as in tough, but possibly odorous as well) bare feet to be able to break/smash a 38 police revolver! Thought the book was Deadly HANDS of Kung Fu, not FEET And our boy Shang must also be a damn good standing still high jumper for dodging that gunshot since it is likely that policeman was either shooting at torso level OR over Shang's head with a warning shot.

It was not stated that he had his citizenship recognized (AFAIK), but Shang-Chi's mother is American.

Even if he weren't local law enforcement has no jurisdiction to lock up or deport people based on their immigration status.
