variant covers for any new X-Men comic series including the previous Return of Wolverine or Resurrection of Jean Grey, yeah some of the variants are cool but most of the time comic shops jack up the prices from 8 to 30 bucks. So theyre about as bad as people scalping prices on ebay or amazon with the variant covers. Im glad this kind of crap didnt go on a whole lot back in the 1990s. All we had back then were the dumb hologram covers for Spectacular Sider-Man, Spider-Man and the X-Men comics for Falal Attractions. Arent the Scottie Young cover variants for the new Wolverine # 1 and other X-Men stuff arent they getting jacked up prices right about now anyway at your local comic shop from 8 bucks or higher? Crazy But you can't blame the comic companies. Imposing imaginary and arbitrary limits on scarcity to increase "collectibility" for easy profits is always a great, successful business model. Look at Beany Babies! Still super popular and creating millionaires every day!

Half of the reason why I left a certain Valiant forum was because of all the rampant speculation. While it's good that it's helping bring in people who don't normally read comics, it's for all the wrong reasons. I mean really, what's even the point of having a comic encased in a slab of plastic if you're never going to read it? (Just kind of defeats the purpose if you ask me) Now I could understand doing it for maybe an older comic or something that had an incredibly low print run like the very first TMNT book for instance...

I still aint going to spend 8 to 15 bucks or more on a more popular variant cover for a Marvel Comic mostly for any new X-Men comic.
Especially the new recent Wolverine #1.
It got out of hand when Unworthy Thor had some variants that looked nice but the prices got jacked up like crazy

Heh... good example Reptilasaurus! (Though, Ty IS still making various forms of the things, so THEY are still making money).
I wonder (I've never really checked), do variants hold any sort of value? Is there a demand for, say the Deadpool month covers of 4 years ago? It seems like the prices escalate mostly as one speculator sells to another one until the last guy gets stuck with the cookie, like reverse musical chairs.

Most of the reason those "rare" variants cost more is because of the number of copies retailers have to order to be eligible to even order it. If it is a 1 in 500 variant, that means the retailer has to order 500 copies of the book to get that variant, so someone has to pay for all the copies of the book that aren't going to sell he had to order to get the variant, and that's going to be the person who buys that variant (or more likely who asked the retailer to order a copy for them). It's not like the retailer can recoup his money on 500 copies of book he normally only sells 20 copies of.
For it to retain value then, there has to be more people who want the cover and are willing to cover that cost than there are copies of that book in circulation, and the likelihood of that is pretty slim.

I would agree... that's why I was asking... seems unlikely years down the road someone would be willing to pay those prices. After the inital purchase from a shop, the prices would be more subject to supply and demand than anything.

Fair warning, Batman #90 has already sold out from Diamond before it was released and a second printing is in the works, so if you want a #90 while waiting for a #89 2nd print, best tell your shop ahead of time. -M Okay, I'll ask the obvious question. Who is this new character that is drawing such much speculation at the moment?

She's called Punchline... a new villainess with ties to the Joker as his "girlfriend"... and we all know what the first comic appearances of the last girlfriend of the Joker go for on the market. There's actually second villain that Tynion is introducing in the run that he also previewed in his newsletter that I thought was more interesting, but that one hasn't caught the hype or speculation fervor. -M

We got a tease of her in #89 but her plotline wasn't featured in #90

I seriously doubt anyone is going to remember or care about Punchline in five years or so

I seriously doubt anyone is going to remember or care about Punchline in five years or so All depends. It's an easy look to cosplay so it could get some traction in the cosplay community, and Harley is getting a lot of play in animated features, if they use Punchline as an antagonist for Harley in her DC Universe animated series or in some other DCAU feature or show, Punchline could pick up traction is audiences outside the comic shops, and if over the next five years they keep her paired with the Joker, who is popular and gets a lot of eye time with fans, add in a Punchline figure in either or both the McFarlane line of DC figs *hey they already did the Batman Who Laughs) or in the SPinmasters line, and Punchline could become fairly well known. If she stays exclusive to comics though, yeah she will fade into obscurity, but the same can be said of any character introduced by DC or Marvel in the last 30 years who remained exclusive to monthly comics and didn't feature in other media or toys. Hardcore comic fans are largely regressive and resistant to new characters or new takes on characters and it takes customers and fans from outside the Wednesday Warrior crowd to give any new character introduced in mainstream comics enough traction to last. -M

Along the lines of the Punchline discussion, whatever happened to the Joker's daughter? I seem to remember her from around the time DC did the "23." issues in the Nu52 period, but I don't follow much new DC so I wasn't sure if she was still a thing or not.

She had been pretty much off the map since 2016...but I think I just saw her on the cover of Nightwing a few weeks back. I didn't read it, but it looked like her.

Harley has some competition now for Puddin's affections eh? It seems like one of the better ways to increase her appeal and staying power would be to match her up as an adversary against Harley in various ways.

Supposedly already in the works, at least as a variant cover showcase to begin with. -M
