As average as a lot of these covers might be, I don't think any of them come close to nor scream "missed opportunity" as much as that Avengers Annual cover.

I had to Google X-Men #221 to figure out why it was "key." After Googling it...I still didn't understand why it was "key."

A great book that even includes some Jack Davis art, but the cover? Meh.

Not only does Zatanna not appear on the cover of her first appearance, she doesn't even rate a mention. But Jan Kyll and his raiders from the year 11964 sure went on to set the comics world on fire, didn't? And even weirder, Zatanna was the in lead story. The cover depicts the back-up story. Julius Schwartz was really not convinced on the salability of Garderner Fox's latest creation, was he?

As average as a lot of these covers might be, I don't think any of them come close to nor scream "missed opportunity" as much as that Avengers Annual cover. Well, that Strange Tales #110 I posted is the first appearance of Doctor Strange. But why not highlight the return of Paste Pot Pete instead! A lot of it is hindsight though. With Doc Strange and Zatanna, they were probably seen as throwaway characters until sales and fan reaction came in and the publishers realized they were draws. But you know in '62, Paste Pot Pete was probably seen as a better sales draw than some unknown magic character that was a 6 or 8 page back up feature, and Zatanna was a throwaway guest-star that probably would never have been seen again if fan reaction hadn't made her a draw to use to further her storyline seeking her father. No one knows ahead of time what will be a key issue or what character will resonate with fans and become a draw and eventually a mainstay, especially in the Silver Age where a lot of stuff was thrown at the wall and organized fandom wasn't much of a factor.Unless it was a book like Showcase or Brae & Bold meant to showcase something new to see if it was a draw, most new characters weren't introduced with the long game in mind. By the time you get to the Bronze Age, things are a little more calculated to try to hype those characters being introduced (see Hulk 181 for instance). But we are in the after period and we often lack the before perspective that informs a lot of these decisions, especially when we look back with the benefit of hindsight of knowing hwat happned witht he characters once they were introduced. -M

The other thing that surprises me is that according to comics.org it was never reprinted in complete form until the 2000s. There was a partial reprint in 1972 in a Supergirl comic and then nothing for the next 30 years.
And no doubt those post-2000 reprints will have the paper and colouring that I find looks so awful with reprints of old comics, so I'm out of luck.

I never thought much of this cover. Wha--?? Easily one of the greatest ASM and Marvel covers. Romita and Kane's work rarely looked better than this, and the subject instantly plays into all of the dark turns Spider-Man's life had taken in this period.

That's interesting. It never really occurred to me to check the reprint status of this story. I was lucky enough to find a low grade copy of the book to complete that quartet of early Zee appearances (Hawkman, Atom, Green Lantern and Elongated Man in Detective Comics).
I do know it is reprinted in the JLA: Zatanna's Search trade paperback (which would be one of the collections you were talking about) with an absolutely glorious Brian Bolland cover.
