I decided to go for it and purchased 5 plastic bins, to see if they'll be better than longboxes for me. It'd be a bit expensive to switch (I've got about 30 long boxes of comics), so it'll be long term if I like them, but I'm tired of the boxes buckling when I move them, and I'm hoping the plastic is sturdier in the stack.

What kind of plastic bins did you buy? Straight / rectangular or the kind with tapered sides and decorative indentations under the hand hold areas? I ask because anything other than a perfectly long-box-like configuration will have your books (especially if bagged) sliding to one side or another, and they could be damaged.

I believe he is talking about something like these... which were mentioned in another thread here and designed specifically for comic storage. -M

While I did get these steeply discounted from office supply liquidation auctions I’m so glad I did. The two I have house my collection easily with room to add more.

Should keep about 700-750 of your books safe.
Tell us if you could put them together without looking at the video

Those are really nice. I could use one of them for the TPBs and hardcovers that I don't have bagged. (I've dealt with closet leakage a couple times )

Getting ready to finally pull the trigger and order my Drawer Boxes I tried Drawboxes, they failed. Once you stack them more than 3 high the amount of effort needed to get the box out of the sleeve is about the same as if you just moved the stack. As MRP noted, I'm getting the BCW ones... the short ones are a better value (being slightly more than 1/2 as larger for slightly less than 1/2 the cost of the long ones). At about $100 for 5 though, it'll be quite a process to swap over if I like them... I'd need 50 at least total. I actually watched the assembly video once already... it seemed fine, but I'm sure I'll have to do it again once they arrive.

Not a good karmic sign... the gave me a Friday delivery date... got all excited and prepared, only to have the box not get on the truck and havethen change it to Monday... hopefully that'll really happen and it's not lost.

The box came yesterday... which was a work day... so I just assembled them. I found it much easier than advertised.. took about 40 minutes to assemble the 5 boxes. I did but the bottom upside down on the first one, but I decided I didn't want to try to fix it and maybe break it.
They seem really well made and sturdy, so I have high hopes they will stack well when full. Working on that this afternoon.

Testing is now in progress! I've filled the 5 boxes with comics and put them in a stack... we'll see how they do as far as stability goes. I figure I'll give it a few weeks to make sure the bottom one doesn't crush or deform in any way before I start buying more.. I've been burned before (rassin' frassin drawer boxes).
While these don't solve the problem of easy access.. I LOVE that they stack nicely and look SO much better than my beat up long box stacks.

Because I know y'all are dying for an update.... So far so good. I have the boxes full in a single stack of 5, and no issues with structural integrity, they stack without an issue.
It'll take a while (since I don't have the money to just buy a 50 at once),but I'm definitely switching to these eventually.

While I did get these steeply discounted from office supply liquidation auctions I’m so glad I did. The two I have house my collection easily with room to add more. I use the exact same thing. I've been able to find them relatively cheap (around $100-150) locally on Craigslist. I have three 5-drawer cabs full, and am getting ready to purchase two more. If you run books in two columns lengthwise (which I do, same as your pictures) each 5-drawer cabinet will hold around 3300-3600 floppies-- that's roughly 13-14 long boxes per cabinet.
I've never looked back.

I've never looked back. Just pray you don't move. The file cabinets are great (I use some too in the game room in our finished basement), but if you have to move, it involves unpacking those cabinets, finding something to put all those comics in (either longboxes or something else) for the move, and ten having to put them back in again. So they are absolutely great as long as you are settled into a place for the long haul, but I wouldn't recommended them to someone who rents rather than owns and may consider moving when leases are up or moves frequently for work or other reasons. -M

There's also the weight factor, which comes into play depending on your residence. the cabinets themselves weigh over 200 pounds (90kg) empty. Add to that the weight equivalent to 13 boxes of comics, and you'd better have a slab foundation or extra support pillars in your crawlspace. Mine live in my concrete-slabbed climate-controlled garage, so I'm lucky in that respect.
