Gerber created Howard and was the best with him, but I liked Mantlo's take too.
A great read and one of my favorite Marvel characters and runs.

Is the first volume of Howard the Duck worth reading? Are his earlier appearances essential to read before starting the series? They have a cow that is also a vampire. So slightly more essential than food or air.

What are the Smith/Quesada Daredevil issues like ?
I had DD from approx 158 - 250 or so back in the day, and have enjoyed Waid's current stuff, but havent tried much in between.

Smith lays on the religion pretty thick but otherwise it's a solid story with one of my favorite villains (the reason I began to pick up the series.) I would recommend it. Great art.

I know Moore Swamp Thing is a must read...but what about Vertigo Swamp Thing? Any other notable newer series of Swamp Thing that are well written and worth the read? I ask because a local shop has some random stuff I considered picking up but did not know much about...

I Any other notable newer series of Swamp Thing that are well written and worth the read? The current Charles Soule run on Swamp Thing is pretty good. Scott Snyder's run was okay but the Rotworld crossover event was mostly garbage.

Also having Eduardo Breccia and Richard Corben do arcs for you didn't hurt.

The Veitch issues are classics. There is a little lull when Doug Wheeler takes over but Nancy A. Collins and Mark Millar (in his first series) each do long runs. Good stuff and lots of good art from Scot Eaton and Phillip Hester. And whatever feelings you have about the writer Millar became he plays it pretty straight on Swamp Thing crafting some nice horror stories. Vertigo Swamp Thing = Good. Warning though... 171 is scarce in the same way Conan 275 is scarce. Hard to find and pricey.

I ask because a local shop has some random stuff I considered picking up but did not know much about... Mark Millar's Swamp Thing run is great. If you only know his work post-Ultimates, you'll be surprised that he could write with some depth once upon a time. Some of the finest single issues I've ever read, too, especially the beautiful "Swamp Dog" and the outrageous "Chester Williams: American Cop" (with Curt Swan art!). Phil Hester was the artist for the majority of the run, and he turns in his usual great job. Also, some gorgeous Totleben covers.
Brian K Vaughn's Swamp Thing centers on Tefe, and it's a very different take on the concept-- basically, what if a capricious teenage girl had the power of a god. It starts off very slow, but by its second year became a very good book. The turning point is a "fill-in" issue with Paul Pope art, then Giuseppe Cammicoli makes his American comics debut inked by Marc Hempl, which lead to some very interesting art.
The Diggle/Dysart series is mostly good, but most of the praise needs to go to Enrique Breccia, whose work is just fantastic. I think at a certain point Dysart became more interested in writing Cajun accents than actually telling a story, but he tells at least one great story, "Healing the Breach", which has the spirit of a weird '80s comic. That I'll recommend if you're not afraid of some trippy craziness.

Martin Pasko's Swamp Thing run needs more love. I agree. It's solid stuff, but it's completely overshadowed by Moore's subsequent run. I'd rate it about the same as Nancy Collins' run-- good but not quite great. Definitely worth reading but not going to blow your mind like Moore's or Veitch's respective runs (or even Millar's or Soule's).
