Funny enough... Ralph McQuarrie did design work for both STAR WARS and BATLESTAR GALACTICA.

Cartoonist Kayfabe took a look at the Frazetta Legends book, originally sold through the Frazetta Museum gift shop, which is focused on Frazetta's pen and ink work, not his painting. It is an interesting discussion of inking techniques and Frazetta's skill as an inker.

That's a pretty nice book but the binding has not aged well. The spine broke on my first copy and I'm trying to be careful with its replacement.

It is with ink that a lot of his earthier abilities were standouts.

This was shared by the Frazetta Girls FB page today, and is a work I am not sure if I had seen before. I'd be curious to read the associated novel if it was done as a paperback cover. It's from 1976... -M

Funny enough... Ralph McQuarrie did design work for both STAR WARS and BATLESTAR GALACTICA. McQuarrie and all of ILM worked on Battlestar Galactica, while Empire was in pre-production. Lucas wanted to keep "the band together" between movies, and allowed them to be available for other work. As a matter of fact, they used Battlestar to do their R+D for Empire, the Hoth scenes in particular. Creating the miniature snow was a problem they solved on BG... and used the expertise gained on Empire. I think I even read that ILM SUGGESTED to the BG producers that some of it take place in the snow. Ironically, Lucas, who profited from ILM's work on BG, successfully sued Universal because BG "looked too much like Star Wars". Crazy.

Today would have been Frank's 95th birthday. Opus Comics have has launched a line of Frazetta comics in conjunction with Frank' granddaughter Sara (of the Frazetta Girls). So far two titles have been launched: Frank Frazetta's Death Dealer (9 issues so far) and Frank Frazetta's DawnAttack (2 issues so far). They have had a strong stable of cover artists so far, but I find myself getting the B cover variants which feature Frank's art, though I did buy the recent DeathDealer Cover Gallery issue that featured all of the covers so far. Death Dealer has been a decent S&S comic so far and Dawn Attack is a promising sci-fi comic so far. If you are a Frazetta fan, maybe take a look. -M

The first Barsoom books I read were The Master-Mind of Mars and A Fighting Man of Mars in the beautiful hardcover reprints done in the early 1970s with Frazetta providing interior illustrations and a painting for the wraparound cover, so my mental imagery of ERBs Mars series has been determined mostly through Frazetta's art ever since. The last time I looked, these editions were still available at pretty reasonable prices, if anyone feels interested. Of course you can find all the images online, if that's enough for you.

I don't know that Frazetta's work for Lampoon was really successful. The jokes really don't land.

I imagine they probably look nice though, which is mainly what I would be looking for in something like this.
I've read very little National Lampoon but from that small sample there was at least one thing I remember being very funny, and a lot of stuff that wasn't. The difference between NL and MAD for me was that I liked MAD's style and approach in general, so it didn't have to be one of their best features or stories for me to enjoy it at least a little bit, whereas if an NL piece was only so-so, it didn't do anything for me at all or I was even turned off by it. But I've been picking up a few back issues here and there over the years, mostly the ones with comics in them, so one of these days I'll read more of it and see it I don't change my mind.

Today marks the 13th anniversary of the passing of the legend that was Frank Frazetta. His grandaughter Sara posted this tribute to him today...
