I have several comics that I bought at cover or a few bucks more that over the years that have shot up in price Avengers 196 100.00 Avengers Annual 10 75.00 Captain Marvel 27 40.00 And each is still exactly where it should be, in my collection. I have even reread them a couple times over the years. God Forfend!!! But I'll be honest if I had 2 or more copies of any of these I would definitely flip a couple. Exactly. If I sold them I would have gaps in my collection.

I always bought for story and art and am glad my collecting days were before the internet drove everything nuts. Like most, I sought the comics of youth and got them cheaply, back when no one was jumping to do a movie about a superhero, except Superman and the joy had pretty much worn off that. Heck, Batman took a bit of time to finally come out (10 years in the making). The only times I ever paid more than a couple of bucks for something usually involved books from the 60s or earlier; and, even then, only a few particularly valued items, like Strange Tales #135, the first Nick Fury, Agent of SHIELD, or the first THUNDER Agents issue. Most I ever payed was $100, for a copy of Exciting Comics #9, from 1941, the first appearance of the Black Terror. After reading the story, which was pretty mediocre, compared to a lot of material from the era, I swore never to do that again and didn't. As it was, I got the best Black terror stories via Bill Black's Golden Age Men of Mystery series, reprinting the Jerry Robinson/Mort Meskin collaborations in black & white.
I used to shake my head at the guys at the comic shop who bought the multiples of X-Men #1 and tried to sell Spider-Man #1 and X-Force #1 to the local shop, who already had dozens of copies for sale. Valiant was the hot ticket at the height of my collecting days, with the scarcer early issues jumping drastically in value, thanks to the success of Unity and the speculator boom that was about to implode.
My hard copies are all gone; but, I have inexpensive digital collections of most everything I ever had an interest in.

Who doesn’t like a bargain? I have many books that I could flip but I just don’t like dealing with eBay these days.
I love buying from ebay, but won't sell there.
Double standards much lol.....

Years ago , I placed the LSH Great Darkness saga on Ebay for a starting bid of .99. The original comics which might have been around 5 or 6 issues were all G/VG. It sold for .99. It left a bad taste in my mouth.

I traded my stuff that had shot up in value to my local shop for credit, not long before getting out of the Navy, to save money. Anything else I had of real value I sold a couple of years later to a comic shop. I thought about trying to sell the rest on e-Bay; but, the prices I would have likely have gotten didn't seem worth it and Valiant had cooled off by then, with the speculator fallout. I ended up donating the bulk of it to a boys home, where a friend volunteered, figuring at least someone could get some enjoyment out of them and it would likely be appreciated by kids who deserved something nice for a change.
I ended up with about 3 months worth of free comics, thanks to trade credit for Starlin Captain Marvels, appearances of the Guardians of the Galaxy, and Deathlok, all of which had shot up in value due to speculator interest and the new titles from Marvel (Infinity Gauntlet, the Valentino GOTG series and the new Deathlok).

RE: Marvel/DC trading cards. Around 2015 I stumbled upon an unopened box of DC's Master Series cards, of which I already had a full set sleeved and in a binder somewhere in my storage unit. It was a $10 "Buy It Now" listing, so I figured why not? It was a lot of fun opening those packs and reliving my childhood for a couple hours. I even got a full set of the foil chase cards! Over the next year or so I bought sealed boxes of just about every card set from the 90's; Marvel Masterpieces, Marvel Universe, various X-Men sets, etc. Ended up with about 13 boxes, opened them all, got the chase cards, etc. And I paid no more than $20 for any of them. Fast forward to now, and sealed boxes for all the same cards are going for $200 - $500!?! People are even paying for empty wrappers! I'm not sure wtf happened or why people are speculating on these things now, but I definitely missed the boat!

There's been some discussion of the trading card resurgence and skyrocketing values down in Shax's trading card thread in the toys, etc. forum. I even linked a youtube vid going over the hows and why of the phenomenon thread here-M

Want to know what's really nuts these days? Non-Sports trading cards. All of those Marvel and DC trading card sets you have in your closet still are actually sellable. Really? What about all those fantasy art cards that came out in the 90s? I've got a ton of them I'd like to clear out. I was going to see if one of the local stores wanted them, but then all the stuff happened. If anyone here is interested let me know.

I think the most valuable one I inadvertently bought is Incredible Hulk Annual #5, the one where Xemnu sends all those silver age monsters to fight him. I got it on eBay in a lot of Hulk Annuals, was mainly interested in replacing the ones I used to have as a kid (this wasn't one of them). I'm sure I didn't pay more than $15 or so. Now it's worth around $100 because of Groot. It's in the GOTG omnibus, so I don't need to hang on to it, but I think it's kind of cool so I keep it for now.
I also have Avengers #196 and the Marvel Premiere that introduced Scott Lang, both acquired for a few bucks each.

Yep, I have bought many, many comics for that lowly starting bid...and the sellers had to send them.
The way around it is NOT to have a low starting bid. Or if you list it with a buy-it-now price, accept offers so there's room for negotiation.
There used to be a seller called neatstuff, who started auctions off at 1 cent. I won the set of 3, X-Men Alpha, Omega and Prime for 11 cents.
