Star Wars Adventures #4
Written by Michael Moreci Art by Megan Levans Cover by Francesco Francavilla Summary: With Qui-Gon under lock and key it's up to his young aprentice Obi-Wan Kenobi to save the Wookies and their Life Day Celebration. Plot: There's a definite stigma that all ages book face among the rank and file Wednesday Warriors(like us) that they can't possibly be good books because all ages books have to talk down to their audiences but writers like Michael Moreci are showing everyone that those sentiments don't have to be true. Moreci is a writer with serious indie chops with such hits as Burning Fields and Roche Limit to his name so you know he's going to tell a good story no matter what and he certainly does here. Sure, it's a tad simplistic with Obi-Wan coming to the rescue by pretending to surrender to the slavers in order to get close enough to free Qui-Gon and the captured Wookies with out starting a major battle but at the same time that direction not only fits with the character of Obi-Wan but the message that violence isn't always the way is delivered in a way that is enjoyable and doesn't come across as too preachy. It's really a story that lives up to it's name: a book that can be enjoyed by everyone. Art: I don't often post the covers to the issues I review these days but I just can't pass up showcasing the work of Francesco Francavilla, not only is the use of the Wookie's head as the border for the art creative but the color pallet of lush greens and yellows really pops against the black. Like always, I'd love to have this cover as a print in my home; it's not just comicbook art it's Art with a capital A. And while not as stylistically exciting as Francavilla's cover work Megan Levans' clean line work definitely gets the job done. I loved the individual and really expressive faces she gave to the Wookies here, it's easy to portray them as just these giant amorphous walking carpets or just clones of Chewbacca, so it's refreshing to see an artist show that they are a real race with actual individuals.
Grade:9/10

My stuff for this week:
Usagi #17 : Some great action here, and I loved the duel. I think that was plenty of heart for the week. I do love the mythology... one of my favorite parts of Usagi
Doctor Aphra #8 : Hadn't read this for a while.. mostly grabbed it for the High Republic tie in. I didn't love the art, but not a bad story. I'm glad to see they moved away from the evil droid and evil wookie, that was just too much. I'll probably still with it for a bit.
Shadow Doctor #2 : A bit on the slow side, but we got quite a bit of Al Capone in this one, which was fun. We need more stuff like this in the industry.

I totally forgot Doctor Aphra was still a book, when was the last time it came out? December, November?

Feels like a long time since I added to the pull list, but looks like it just skipped February (#7 was Jan. 20th)

I was actually surprised that they started a new volume of Doctor Aphra. The last trade wrapped her story up perfectly IMHO.

I was too.. seemed like the sort of character that would go into limbo when the creator was done, but apparently not. It seems like a totally different book, based on this issue. I suspect they plan on focusing on the archelogy part of the character to tie the new high republic stuff in with the 'current' universe. Maybe that will just be this story, but I suspect that will be the focus.
