Ma Hunkel with an attitude. I hadn't thought of Ma Hunkel at all, but you're right!!! The trashcan lid is also a great reminder of our younger days. What comic-book reader from the ?0s and 70s hasn't used a trashcan lid as a shield? (Their only problem was that the handle was sort of on the wrong side... and they did smell a little.)Yeah, we solved that problem in my neighborhood by buying trash cans made of vibranium.

I saw the preview... IIRC, he's 'the Captain America of the Railways' and is an old school hobo... weird choice for a gay character... and I was a bit concerned about the the outfit... seems like it was a bit stereotypical to me. I'm not really that interesting (reading very little Marvel atm) but hopefully it'll be good.
This is definitely the way to do it though, creating new character that can be good role models out side the usual white male superhero norm is far better than doing stuff like they did with Iceman.

Talk about a weird choice...are hobos even really a thing anymore? And do people under the age of say 30 even know what a hobo is?

The term "hobo" may not be the word of choice anymore but the people/society it represents are still very much a presence. Every city has transient/vagrant workers. They are all visible if you look around and acknowledge rather than to ignore them.

new terms using hobo are still popping up in pop and geek culture. A new term in D&D for instance is describing adventuring parties who travel around just killing things as murder hobos.
For example...
It was never a term I heard in gaming until about a year ago. It may stem form things like World of Warcraft, I am not sure of the origins, but it is an example that hobo is still in use and part of the pop culture consciousness.
