what I've gotten out of this thread? Wanda sure does like to lay down on comic covers Hey, a girl needs her rest. And to be fair, some of the other Avengers are also taking power naps on a few of those covers.

My first Avengers reading was the WCA series, which I bought in the early 90s as back issues (Along with Iron Man) since my first LCS had them cheap and a solid run.... I stopped with the VIsion nonsense, then went back later and got some of the later ones.
I think my favorite roster is the Busiek one... with Justice and Firestar added to the big guns. The Capt. Marvel (Monica) lead team is a close 2nd.

Let's talk about Br'iar Barton, ol' Hawkeye for a few minutes.
My first intro to Hawkeye was his 4 issue miniseries, written, I think, by Gruenwald. This lead into the WCA mini-series and eventual ongoing series. Thus Hawkeye and Mockingbird have always been a seminal couple to me. So it was interesting to see his previous relationships while I've been catching up on the Silver/Bronze Age issues, specifically with Wanda and Natasha. Though in those issues, under Thomas & Englehart, Clint's machismo comes on a bit strong for me sometimes. Especially when Englehart took over, Clint was all about making it serious with Wanda only to be rejected in favor of Vision. Then he tried to re-connect with Natasha in San Fran with no success. His machismo was in full force then. (The carnival costume he wore during this time didn't help matters either).
Then there's his attitude about needing to prove he is a hero in his own right. Thus the seemingly never-ending cycle of him joining/leaving/re-joining/re-leaving the team. I shook my head over some of his thoughts (paraphrasing) like 'Hey, I don't need them!.....what's that, they don't miss me?.....well, Fine!....I don't need them either!....Never did!......Hey, you guys need me, right?....Right!
Plus, I have never ever used the word 'chick' in reference to a girl unlike Clint who will use it to describe any girl apparently. Maybe I'm old-fashioned but while I don't consider the word to be insulting, I do feel like it can be demeaning in a way. For me, it's up there with how Wolverine would sometimes use the word 'frail' in reference to a girl.

Yeah Ol' brother Barton is the atypical man child concept. Brash, rash, eager to prove his worth/skill, easily takes offense, makes mistakes and fires his mouth off without thinking far faster than his arrows. Yet he is someone you want beside you, steadfast, determined, faithful, not quite as dense or dumb as he pretends to be, always has your back, even courageous or fearless in his way.
Known quite a few Hawkeye's at every job I worked at over the years. We can't all be Captain America, can we?

Barton started out as a brash loudmouth, but he did mature some and became, I think one of the most resourceful Avengers. He's defeated much more powerful opponents by his lonesome before with his craftiness. I like how he gave Captain America a hard time early on, then Cap earned his respect and he became a Cap supporter.

Hawkeye was also the one to give Steve Rogers the neefed kick in the butt when he was disenchanted with the Political aspects and gave up being Captain America. It was our man Clint posing as Golden Archer in helping to motivate Rogers becoming Nomad.

Speaking of Hawkeye, (yes, he is a fave Avenger) it's rather frustrating how current writers keep reverting him back to "jerk/loudmouth" mode. Over the decades he has matured from hot head arrogance to mature intelligent leader. The braggart tom cat attitude is long gone and is a "trope" (yes a plug for another thread) better off forgotten.
The man has lead Avengers West Coast and the Thunderbolts successfully. He was able to outsmart an Elder of the Universe. He has proven himself time and again as a team player, reliable partner and go to guy. Let the simplified stereotype go away.
The MCU ignored those in favor of showing his heart and dedication to his team and for his family. A deadly marksman capable and an important facet of the Avengers who stands side by side in equal importance of Super Soldier, Thunder God, Scientific Genius and Gamma Powered Man-Monster. That is the purple clothes Ace Archer concept I want to read about.

Avengers 130 was the first issue I owned, and I've bought the issue at least 3 different times when starting collecting again after periods of quitting comics for good. Nothing really special about this comic, but it made enough of an impression on me back in 1975 that I never forgot the story and some of the exact panels during my last 25 year break from comics. Avengers and Amazing Spider-Man have always been my two favorite comics (far above everything else), and during one of my early collecting forays, I was able to obtain issue 100 to around issue 190. I had a few stragglers under #100 (57, 73, 74), and my goal was to get them all the way from #1. I was in about the same boat with ASM, with the same goal, and then I just lost interest. Held onto them a few years, but when my first car needed rear tires (because I burned them off) I sold the comics I had left to pay for them. I've since completed both those goals. After a couple of brief collecting periods and a long break, I started back in 2010 with enough money to realistically do it. It took me 2 years to complete Avengers. I actually won my Avengers 1 from a grab bag on ebay.

Very cool that you won your Avengers #1 @pat T as I did the same for the 1st 5 issues. My regular LCS did all sorts of holiday contests providing prizes of many classic comics in poorer condition. Good for reading but not the big selling mint conditions. One Halloween the LCS had a drawing contest and you had to include the shop's name so they kept the artwork to put in their window. I did up the Univetsal Monsters in their Marvel incarnations in a graveyard with the LCS shop name in horror style font with cobwebs.
The shop had everyone that bought comics in October cast their vote and on Halloween night the LCS hosted a sale/party while announcing the winner. Great holiday treat in the 80's for this Avengers addict to get those 5 issues for free!

That's amazing to have a complete run up to 190. Myself, I have most of the Avengers comics that I really want except for the first few years - up to #40 or so: those early back issues are too expensive for me. After that, I'm fairly complete up to the end of the Korvac saga, which is where I more or less lose interest in the series as far as the stories are concerned. But I'd like to get all the Perez and Byrne issues I missed from then up to around #200 or whenever it was ,just for the artwork: still looking for a few of those, don't often see them at what I consider a reasonable price.

Plenty of great Avengers stories ahead if you want to collect. Fairly average through the early 200's and then Unca Roger Stern signs on with the issue 227 through 279. I really enjoy this run and it is fun with a lot of intrigue. Well worth seeking out in whatever formats you can find.
And to let it be known, I have the entire volume 1 through 402 in monthly issues, on digital and then ALL the Essential's in black and white. Along with the complete West Coast Avengers series. Yeah, Avengers is my team of choice. Rick Jones ain't got nothing on me!

It isn't only the Avengers, I sort of lost my taste for Marvel in general around that time so that even the better stuff from the 80s and beyond doesn't appeal to me much.
Looking quickly at that Stern run, I see that the artist for the first 20 or 30 issues is Al Milgrom, whose work I don't especially care for. However, it looks like John Buscema and Tom Palmer take over somewhere in the #250s, and while their work from this period doesn't look the same as their 60s art, I still like it, so I might try to collect those issues one of these days, especially since they don't seem too pricey.

Check out the TPB for Under Siege. I read The Avengers a lot longer than some of the other longtime superhero comics I had been reading. Because of how good the Stern/Buscema/Palmer issues were. Under Siege is a highlight of the 1980s. And then it kind of went downhill almost immediately. Mostly because Marinna is not a good character.

I'm not familiar with the Marinna character but I don't like what Ive heard about the Sersi/Crystal/Black Knight love triangle, whenever in the run that storyline comes along. It just doesn't square at all with how I see the two heroines involved and i the kind of thing that really brings a writer down in my estimation. For Under Siege, honestly, I'd probably rather look for the back issues, even if it ends up being a little more expensive, because I dislike the colouring in the reprints so much for anything originally on newsprint.

Yeah, lots to avoid during the Harras years of Avengers. Stories and art which makes the brain cry and the eyes bleed. Never did like the idiotic put the team in leather jackets over their costumes. Such a dumb look. Also never liked Lightsaber wielding Black Knight. But Council of Kang along with the introduction of Nebula I liked. I can't win 'em all I guess.
