With such a large stable of heroes found in Avengers I find as much love for the lower tier heroes along with the big guns. I loved Hawkeye before it was cool to admit. I loved Black Knight before he was a bigger deal. Swordsman earned my love in his struggle to redeem himself. Falcon finally making the team was long overdue. Seeing 70's faves Nova and Jack of Hearts was so bittersweet for their misused time upon the team. She-Hulk came into her own while with the A-Team. Wonder Man raised from the "dead" before he became a whiner scaredy cat was awesome. Avengers provided ample opportunities for many a hero to shine, stepping up their popularity or providing additional depth to their characterization. Joining up with the premiere team of Marvel put many in the spotlight or bringing them new fans to help create interest in them.
That's similar to my experience - very early on, my favourite Avenger was the Black Panther, even though he didn't get much spotlight. This would have been the Thomas/Buscema era. Of the "Big 3", Thor was the one I liked best, though more in his solo series than in the Avengers. Later on, Moondragon pretty quickly became my favourite after I picked up the series in Englehart's last storyline. And when I went back and read the earlier part of his run, it was Mantis that stood out to me. In Shooter's first run Wonder Man was one of the more interesting members, though that may have been due in part to Englehart's re-introduction of the character a few issues before.
Not sure if this continued after I quit the series at the end of the Korvac Saga. One day I'll read at least up to #200 or so and find out about those couple of years for myself. From the little I've seen of Shooter's 2nd run and Busiek's, I don't find the new members from those eras very interesting.

Spider-Man as an Avenger, yay or nay? I cant say I agree with it, he just seems better as a solo character who occasionally interacts with the team (of course, I have the same opinion of Batman being a member of the JLA).

He’s been in the Avengers several times and it never rang true to me. He is definitely a solo character.

I agree with that on Spidey, solo operator for the most part. If anything when it comes to teams, I feel like he has a closer connection to the FF.

The Bendis-era additions to the team don’t seem to fit at all.
Spidey isn’t a “team” player (agree that he would work with FF better, or possibly put him in a mentor role for the New Warriors back in the day).
Wolverine had zero business being anywhere near the Avengers, but he sells books and that’s the name of the game, so he got shoved in there.
I liked what Bendis did to raise Luke Cage’s profile in the MU, but he’s street-level, not cosmic-threat-fighting level.
The whole storyline with The Hood should have been against Defenders-level characters (Luke, Jessica, Iron Fist, Moon Knight, maybe Spidey, She-Hulk, Tigra, and Daredevil), not Avengers-level. That said, if you don’t have Iron Man, Thor, and Cap around (in some combination), are we really even taking about The Avengers? I know the team roster had changed time and time again over the years, but without one or two of those three on the team (and yes, I know Cap was part of it so they could do the whole Civil War storyline), it feels like Dr. Druid-era Avengers, a watered-down shadow of the team capitalizing on the name for recognition.

I much prefer the "lone" hero types as guest stars in Avengers. Black Knight, Captain Mar-vell, Spidey, Daredevil, Black Widow, Falcon, Luke Cage, Iron Fist. Shang Chi, Dr. Strange, Ghost Rider, Blade and others. Anymore it feels like Marvel Heroes are automatically issued an Avengers membership with their birth certificate!

I understand (and mostly agree) with the sentiment that Spidey is an ill-fit for the Avengers, but I'd hazard to say that if Spidey had ended up joining the Avengers in Avengers #11 or had been one of the replacement Avengers to join in #16 because of that issue, and stayed on the team even if only for a brief time, the overwhelming sentiment in comic fandom would be "of course Spidey belongs in the Avengers" because comic fan opinions are almost universally formed by the status quo of comics when they first started reading comics and if the Spidey-Avengers link had been established, even briefly, in the Silver Age, it would be the presumed status quo of pretty much all comic fans, but because Spidey didn't become a member until after most of us started reading so it doesn't seem appropriate. For those who started reading during the New Avengers era or later though, it seems perfectly fine as it was the status quo when they started reading.

I agree about Spidey and the Bendis Avengers. It seemed more like the Defenders where anybody who passed by could hang around for a bit and be part of the team.

If alternate realities count, Colossus was an Avenger in #267.
...albeit not for long

The original Captain Britain was a team member in Secret Avengers, if that counts, and I think Chuck Austen had a new female CB join the Avengers when he was writing it.

Depends on your definition of "hero", but I dont think Man-Thing was ever an Avenger.

Man-Thing would have looked most excellent in a giant bomber jacket.
