1940s/1950s: Eisner's Spirit, Disney ducks by Barks, Pogo, any number of individual stories published by EC 1960s: Nothing I've read really stands out to me here 1970s: Contract with God, Logan's Run (Marvel), Battlestar Galactica (Marvel), lots of other stuff 1980s: Love & Rockets, Groo the Wanderer 1990s: Grendel Tales: Devils & Deaths/Devil's Choices 2000s: Safe Area Gorazde, Rabbi's Cat 2010s: Joe Kubert Presents.
Postscript 1: I think if I'm asked this question in about five years, when I've (hopefully) had some time to catch up with a lot of the books from my 'lost decade' (most of the 1990s and early '00s), my answers will probably be quite different for several of these decades. Postscript 2: For the 1970s, I was tempted to put Goodwin and Simonson's Manhunter in first place - yeah, he wears that outlandish outfit that puts him in the superhero camp, but it's more pulpy, noirish action/adventure than superhero.

I'm trying to come up with a decade in which my favorite comic would be a superhero comic. And I don't think I can come up with one.
For me, the 60s would be the most likely candidate... I'll have to think about it. But no, for the most part, leaving out superhero comics doesn't really narrow it down much in my case either.

I was tempted to throw The Phantom Stranger on my 70s list, and Sandman Mystery Theatre on my 90s, as they can only peripherally be considered superhero books.

I left the 1960s out in my post above, but I got to thinking: to the extent that Steranko's Nick Fury, Agent of SHIELD stories from Strange Tales and then the solo series count as non-superhero, I'd put that down for the '60s.

I left the 1960s out in my post above, but I got to thinking: to the extent that Steranko's Nick Fury, Agent of SHIELD stories from Strange Tales and then the solo series count as non-superhero, I'd put that down for the '60s. the general rule of thumb I used whether to include something or not (and there were exceptions) was that if the stories took place in a shared universe where super-heroes existed, they were super-hero stories by association and I didn't include them. Of course, by that token, I should have left off Marvel's Conan which had ties to the MU, and a few others I did include. I left Phantom Stranger off even though most of the stories in his book were horror because he was a member of the JLA, so a super-hero by association, Falk's Phantom stories are jungle stories, but Phantom himself is a costumed hero so as much a super-hero as Batman or Shang Chi, who both wear costumes (of a sort) and co-exist and operate in a super-hero universe. Gaiman's Sandman could also be excluded by this standard, but I chose to include it, so my own standards are arbitrary. but since Captain America, Tony Stark and a passel of super-villains populated the Nick Fury stories, they got the super-hero story label and left off. It really is difficult to have a hard and fast dividing line as to what is and isn't super-hero stories when the stories are set in a super-hero universe. Much easier if super-heroes aren't part of the equation for the story at all. -M

No super-heroes in Ennis' Punisher MAX, so I'd stick that in my list somewhere.
