Harsh, but I think that you're right about good and bad, us and them, etc.
I think Liberals or Progressives tend to see things as shades of grey and not as easy with a cookie cutter solution.

Here's an interesting study: www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2014-10/vt-brt102914.phpBrain responses to disgusting images help reveal political leaningsOn verge of Election Day, Virginia Tech scientists find that biology influences political ideology"... we found that the brain's response to a single disgusting image was enough to predict an individual's political ideology." I can sort of see that. The White House, for instance -- there's a disgusting image. Congress ... at least as disgusting, but probably more. Wall Street -- flesh-crawlingly revolting. A country club. A rich neighborhood (as well as, for of course completely opposite reasons, a poor one). A luxury-car dealership. A Super Bowl crowd consisting of people who paid enough for a ticket to feed a poor family of four for probably a month ... at the very least. People who smugly pay for a comic book (or a vintage pair of basketball shoes, or [insert fetish items of one's choice]) than someone like me forks over in mortgage payments for a year. Etc. etc. etc. Yep. Capital-D disgusting.

And watching the very people most victimized by the sanctimonious, predatory class proudly voting for them with ballot and pocketbook in the political arena and the marketplace. Also disgusting.

Very true. As usual, I won't be joining the masses today, for good &/or ill.

Anyone desirous of being elected to a position of power almost certainly is utterly unsuited for the conscientious exercise of same. That strikes me as an innate flaw, & it's one reason I place myself at the anarchist end of the continuum, nothwithstanding the fact that that goal will never be realized. (Neither will world peace or an infinite number of other great things, but people continue to dream of them, it seems like.) Couldn't agree more. This is something that's been floating around in my brain while I listen to a history of Rome podcast. It's fascinating, disgusting, enlightening, etc., to see the parallels between the backstabbing (often literally), petty, shortsighted grasping of those that sought power in antiquity to those today. The system is more or less fixed, the elections and parties more or less bought and paid for, so why would anyone seek power and prestige in this system other than to feed it? The fatal flaw in human nature seems to be that altruistic people are simply outnumbered and very few seek or gain positions of power because of this nature. Maybe if we can somehow survive long enough to evolve, we'll all eventually be toga wearing immortals who have figured all this out? (Probably by saying "f@#! it, let's just use genetic engineering to eliminate greed, sociopaths, pop-up ad designers, etc.)

Hope everyone will be participating by casting a vote in your mid-term elections today.
In Ohio, we have an important race for Governor that could have lasting ramifications, not just for the state, but for the entire nation. The media has been saying the race is a no contest and the Democratic party has pulled out its support, but I like to believe votes actually count.

Maybe it's b/c I'm Irish and we're used to voting early and often.

If I had to describe my politics it would be 'Socially Liberal, Financially Conservative'. It's been a while since I liked a candidate I was offered for office. Of course, my wife thinks I'm right of Rush Limbaugh.. she's VERY left-leaning Social Democrat in the best European tradition (I call her a Socialist, but she doesn't like that much).

Here in Massachusetts, the Governor's race is pretty hot, sadly because both candidate are so terrible neither one is desireable. I voted for the independent, who has no chance to win, in hopes that if enough others do the same we'll get a decent candidate some day. Also alot of of key ballot questions, including increasing the bottle deposit law to include water bottles and sports drinks (it's just soda and alcohol currently), banning casinos, and tagging the gas tax (and thus the bridges and roads budget) to inflation.

I agree about those I deem actual liberals, but IMO there are extreme liberals-- I choose to call them "ultraliberals"-- who are just as oriented on "good" and "bad" as any conservative.

I dropped off our ballots at the county elections office last night. The incumbents are all comfortable in my state & district; the real action this year is in the initiative questions. We may become the third state to legalize pot and the first to require labeling of GMO food.

I admit to not seeing things in shades of grey. "He doesn't think gays should have equal rights." "But he really loves Jesus..." "So? It's still bigotry."
