The first two X-Men covers are crowded and cramped, not examples of Kirby at his best. (Where exactly is Iceman tossing his snowballs? He’s about two feet away from Magneto and missing him entirely!) And you’re right, foxley, neither villain looks particularly menacing. And though I usually love Adams covers as much as the next guy, that one I never liked even when I bought it off the stands. I couldn’t then and still can’t take Sauron seriously. He looks like he’s wearing a pair of overalls from the boys husky department at Sears with a hole cut out of the backside for his cute little tail. And the figures of the X-Men themselves look distorted, as if we’re seeing them in a funhouse mirror, especially Cyclops. Too bad Adams couldn’t have designed the cover more in line with the way he designed covers he did with Man-Bat, who resembles Sauron: bulky, powerful, enormous scalloped wings, frightening face, etc.

This was a great debut cover.

and except for the color of the costume, they captured it perfectly in the film adaptation... oh wait, that's not Connery as Killraven... -M

I can't believe Connery took that role.

I can't believe Connery took that role. Maybe he liked the outfit.

I can't believe Connery took that role. Maybe he liked the outfit. He's the only one.

Maybe he's trying out for the Red Sox. He wouldn’t have made it, but he would have been a shoo-in for the Yankees. That would be fine. Rooting for the Yankees is like rooting for Walmart.

That's not a rejected cover; it's a commission he did much later. I think the commission was based on one of a number of rejected sketches Golden had proposed for the cover. The editor probably wouldn't have been happy to obscure so much of the logo, and there wouldn't have been any room for that awful bicycle banner. Jim Shooter seems to have signed off Golden's page at the bottom, which is rather strange. Rogue's first actual cover appearance isn't all that impressive either.

For such a prominent threat, both in comics and on-screen, he had the simplest of cover intros:

Rogue's first actual cover appearance isn't all that impressive either. That's her second cover appearance - she was with the rest of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants on Avengers Annual #10's cover. Dave Cockrum's X-Men cover was probably better than his interior artwork for that issue, as he inked the cover himself but wasn't even doing full pencils inside.

Except for Rogue's weird pants.
