I haven't seen a single debut cover so far in this thread that tops this one: (Ghost Rider debut in Marvel Spotlight #5) There was no way a typical comic book reader of 1972 was going to leave that on the spinner racks. I second that emotion. I thought the story was an A+, from the writing to the art.
Too bad it's so expensive!

[gloat]Yeah, but I managed to get a great deal on my copy--around 21 cents after taxes, I think. [/gloat]

I could afford the 20 cents at the time. It was those DC Giants that set you back.

among the best (and purposefully not going for "iconic" character / covers) X-men 111. . .1st appearance of Arcade: Arcade first appeared in Marvel Team-Up 65-66, featuring Captain Britain.

Yes, it is Banshee; he and all the X-Men were hypnotized by Mesmero and turned into carnies. Arcade would first appear on an X-Men cover with issue #123, which I remember not buying when I saw it in the Ontario town of Gananoque during a camping trip with my parents. The reason? I had no money left! (Oh, the indignity). I learned something.
I've always seen this at cons tagged 1st appearance Arcade, since he's dressed just like him.
Arcade wears a white suit. And no hat. He looks nothing like that.

This was a nice cover debuting Doc Sampson. Too bad the character never really achieved any type of popularity. He's still appearing regularly, though. And his name is Samson.

I have always loved Annihilus as a character....visually too the colour scheme is great. But man his first cover stinks I much prefer this one later on... As a young kid, I didn't quite get the memo that his name derived from the word annihilation, and so I pronounced his name (in my head) as annie-HILLus.That's how we pronounce it in French! (Well, more like anni-hill-üs, but close enough).

Previously mentioned in the thread but not posted. A lousy debut cover. I love this cover. There's something about the Four in the foreground with the night-time sky and the sense of eerie quiet (before the storm?) it evokes that really gets me. FF 29 is an even better example of this.
Yeah it's great.I like the Inhumans being in the far background - and IIRC they were still something of a mystery at this point, so it makes sense from a story perspective as well. I do think it's Karnak lifting the section of wall, even though he wasnt usually shown performing such feats of strength. Possibly the characters weren't fully defined when this early cover was done - Triton looks way different to what he did later on as well, once Kirby settled on a design for him.
I thnk King-size FF#6 is a really good cover too, though perhaps not a good Annihilus cover in the sense of introducing the character as a major villain. But it does a good job of getting across the dramatic idea of the FF being lost in the unknown universe of the Negative Zone.

I don't think this has been posted yet.
I think the Iron Man figure is too big . They should have made him smaller - much smaller, like a dot. Then I could pretend it was some other character altogether.
Seriously, though, as an introduction cover that was a really cool idea, having Hawkeye in all those different poses. Still think they could have done something different with the central figure - e.g. perhaps not having another character there at all or, maybe better, having all the Avengers as a group but sized down several notches.

I suspect this cover was thrown together at the last minute, as all the figures are taken from panels of the story inside.
Cei-U! I summon the haste!

I don't think this has been posted yet. Which side of the equation are you nominating it for: worst or best?
