It seems as if it is based on the famous George Bellows painting of the Dempsey-Firpo fight, sometimes referred to as "Dempsey Through the Ropes," (though from another angle), which also seems to have inspired the cover art for Aurora model from the mid-60s, which was often paired with a Babe Ruth model in ads on the back covers of many a DC comic.
NB: The bald guy in the lower left corner is the artist. Makes me wonder if Neal Adams knew this as he was drawing the famous cover farrar chose as an example for this week's contest.
(Mort Kunstler is credited with the model kit cover art, which actually looks quite a bit like the Impact cover.)
