And...I think I'm going to close this thread out. From this point forward it's very rare for me to have seen more than four or five movies in a given year and rare as hen's teeth that I've seen one more than once. Which means that I'm super unlikely to have anything but vague memories of them.
Thanks to everyone who has paid attention and played along.

I don't know if I'll be able to come up with much for the next few years either but it's fun going through the lists and seeing titles you've forgotten or things you meant to see at the time and never got around to, hearing about new things from other posters, etc, etc.

No objections at all.

I also would like to keep going. I still see quite a few movies every year, and I have an IMDb list of my favorite movies for every year that I update in the first few months of the year.
Sometimes it takes longer than others to decide what my favorite is, but for 2024, my favorite was Bottoms. It was no contest.

I had been doing that, though not on IMDB, but stupidly wiped out all my lists for the last three or four years this past January. I managed to reconstruct the books and comics lists from other sources but not the movies or tv ones. Maybe I should try keeping a record on IMDB so it'll be there in case I screw up again.

Well...there seemed to be enough interest that I'll push on to 2023 or 2024. What the Hell. So, after some delay... 2014. Guardians of the Galaxy - I haven't seen this one since it came out, I don't think. But I never in my life expected to see a Guardians of the Galaxy movie, and that along is enough to get a mention. And it was a pretty fun movie a that. Captain America: The Winter Soldier - Again, saw this when it came out. Maybe one time since...but probably not. But it seemed like it was far better than average Marvel fare. John Wick - This, on the other hand, I definitely remember. Probably the best pure action movie/franchise that I've seen in a very very long time. It's just pure adrenaline rush and Keanu is really effective in it. I really liked this one a lot. The Lego Movie - I'm pretty sure I've only seen this one once. My youngest was 11 when it came out and very into Legos. It was actually very watchable. So that's nice. As usual there are many films I've either not seen or not seen in far too long. Including; most foreign films; Whiplash; Interstellar (I saw it, but barely remember it); The Grand Budapest Hotel (I might have seen this...maybe); Nightcrawler (I should see this); everything else. So what's my favorite film of 2014? It's John Wick. And it's not really that close. It's the only one I actually really remember. And 2014 in Film for those as need a look.

Johhn Wick would be up there for me and Guardians and Winter Soldier were two of the better Marvel movies, though I think the former has had a bad influence on subsequent MCU films by encouraging them to over-emphasise the comedy at the expense of other elements. I'll have to go through the lists to see what I can come up with for myself beyond those.

Let's look at 2015...for shits and giggles. The Martian - This was my favorite SF book of the new millennium and it was made in to one of my favorite movies of the last 15 to 20 years. Just a great combo of hard SF, adventure, humor. Matt Damon is just incredible as Mark Watney. Though the amount of money that the U.S. has spent over the years to bring Matt Damon home is astronomical. I'd put this up among Ridley Scott's best films. Mad Max: Fury Road - I really didn't expect this to be as good as it was. Just a kinetic frenzy of great stunts and insane characters. And you have to love having such a strong female lead. George Miller never ceases to amaze me. Ex Machina - Another excellent SF film (from a really stellar year for SF). This is kind of the opposite of Mad Max. This is heavy on ideas rather than effects. A super smart movie with an amazing score. Three very strong lead performances, anchored by an incredible turn by Alicia Vikander. This should have been a much bigger film. The Hateful Eight - I think I like this better than a lot of people, but it's still not one of Tarantino's better films. It's a weird mash-up of western with a chamber mystery and the violence and the general mayhem turned up to 9+. Not entirely successful, but it entertained me. Ant-Man - I think my estimation of this one has grown over time. Which makes it sad that the sequels kind of blew it. This is a super fun romp. Almost a caper action-comedy. It tempers a bit of the Marvel movie bombast. Paul Rudd is likable as usual. Michael Pena kind of steals the show. It's not a great film...but it's fun and diverting. As usual there are many films I've either not seen or not seen in far too long. Including; most foreign films; Spotlight; Creed; The Big Short; Revenant (saw it...don't remember it); Kingsman (I need to see this again); Bone Tomahawk (I really need to see this again); So what's my favorite film of 2015? Probably not hard to figure out from above, but it's The Martian. This was a super strong year for real SF movies. But for me The Martian is special. And 2015 in Film for those as need a look.

I missed a lot of stuff this year for some reason, including the SF movies that I usually make a point of trying to see even if I'm not convinced by the marketing campaign, etc.
The Hateful Eight I had pretty much the same reaction to: if it had been the first Tarantino movie I'd seen I suspect I'd have been blown away but even as it was I found it intensely fascinating. And of Tarantino's two westerns I'd rate it over Django Unchained - I wonder if it was a bit of a reaction on his part to that one as it's so much more focused. Even though I'm not especially a western fan, I think he should make a third one because as far as I recall his first two have dealt in one way or another mostly with the injustice of African slavery, black vs white, etc. But the more fundamental issue of American vs Indigenous was ignored.
I missed Fury Road at the time but did finally see it a year or two ago and I think that of these it might be my pick of the year. For me, it probably would have been the right movie in which to kill off the series title character, as it emphasised so much the "Mad" over the "Max" (i.e. the person, the human being) in the first half that as a viewer I felt no sympathy with him for the rest of the film and felt his conversion from foe to friend of the fleeing women unconvincing. But putting that aside, an incredible adrenalin-rush of a movie.

For 2014, I have listed …
The Grand Budapest Hotel
X-Men: Days of Future Past
I saw both of these movies in the theater in a year where I didn’t see as many movies as I usually do. So maybe I’d feel differently if I looked at a list of films from 2014 and noted some of the films I saw later.
But I think they’re both pretty solid picks. I watch a lot of superhero films that I don’t think are that great, but I thought Days of Future Past came pretty close to living up to the hype.
My two favorite Wes Anderson films are The Life Aquatic and The Royal Tenenbaums. But Budapest is pretty good too.
P.S. Oh yeah. John Wick. I saw John Wick quite a bit later. I think the next two John Wick films were available already. So I wasn’t even thinking of it as a 2014 film. Definitely an honorable mention. It might even make it a three-way tie.

For 2015, I have The Hateful Eight listed as my favorite.
I saw Fury Road a little later. It’s in the running. Hateful Eight and Fury Road are both such great movies! But I saw Hateful Eight when it first opened, on New Year’s Eve, on a really big screen, and for four hours, I remember feeling like I was stuck in that tavern with all those horrible, hateful people. An unforgettable cinema experience. It’s one of the reasons I go to the movies.
I will probably never see it again unless I get a chance to once again see it on the big screen.
And, yeah, I would love to see Fury Road again, this time in a theater.
