Finally on to 2017. Which was actually a pretty damn good year for movies.
Get Out - I'm not really much in to horror films, especially contemporary ones, but this was just a damn fine film. At turns scary, funny and thought provoking. Jordan Peele just creates an excellent world.
Logan - I was well done with the X-franchise by the time this came out, but the reviews drew me in. And I'm glad they did. Because this is an excellent film, no superhero qualifier needed. I feels like Mangold set out to make a good movie and then added in the superhero elements to accent it. I would be inclined to argue it's the best superhero film ever. Jackman is incredible at every turn.
Baby Driver - I really hate that name. But damn it's a fun movie. Edgar Wright has seldom failed me and while this wasn't Sean of the Dead or Hot Fuzz, it was still a great fun movie. The ending is weak and watching it now with Kevin Spacey is squicky. But it's a super fun caper film.
Spider-Man Homecoming - This movie just made me happy. It's not a great movie. It has issues. But the cast is super compelling and it just makes me feel good.
Coco - I've not been overly excited about late phase Pixar. But damn this is a great movie. The animation is absolutely gorgeous. The story is compelling and sweet without being treacly. It's outstanding to see the Mexican culture explored in such a great way. It's an amazing meditation on family, memory and death.
John Wick: Chapter 2 - If you liked John Wick, you're going to like this sequel. If you didn't...this ain't gonna change your mind. It's a kinetic thrill-ride in to sensory overload. And I find it to be great fun. So there you go.
The Death of Stalin - Super fun satirical comedy based on the French graphic novel. Steve Buscemi is delightful as Khruschchev. No, it's not particularly historically accurate. But it's super funny. And any film that can piss of Putin is aces in my book.
The Lego Batman Movie - Two words: Condiment King. Nuff said.
As usual there are many films I've either not seen or not seen in far too long. Including; most foreign films; Thor: Ragnarok & Guardians of the Galaxy II (I've only seen these once each and don't really remember them); Lady Bird; Phantom Thread; The Shape of Water (I saw it then and barely remember it);
So what's my favorite film of 2017? Tough one. I like a lot of these. But I'll go with the one I've probably seen the most often and that always makes me feel good...Coco.
And 2017 in Film for those as need a look.
