#3. Archie and Betty.Archie Andrews. The eternal teen ager. Caught in a romantic triangle with Betty Cooper and Veronica Lodge. What a guy! When I was that age I would have been happy getting one girl to notice me! However I am FIRMLY in the Betty camp. Veronica is way too much trouble to manage. Betty is definitely the better of the two. This pairing brings back all those awkward yet amazing feelings when I first entered the world of dating 45 years ago. Even now at the age of 60 it is fun to go back and sort of "relive" that crazy and magic time of life from 16-22 yrs old.

Today's Song: "All My Loving"- The Beatles #3- Margarita Luisa "Maggie" Chascarrillo and Esperanza Leticia "Hopey" GlassAll of you here know my love for Love And Rockets, so having Maggie and Hopey was an obvious choice to be on the list. Anytime I can sing the praises of Jaime Hernandez, I'll do it proudly. The long and complicated romance between Maggie and Hopey is tough to fully explain in a blurb, but what makes them compelling is the love they still hold for each other despite moving in and out of their lives. For close to 40 years, the romance between these two ladies blossomed from a night at a punk show to being an anchor for each other as they move through life. While they might have dated and Hopey had more of a want to be with Maggie, Maggie's love for Hopey was beyond the physical. From misfit punks from a little cow town to them moving to a bigger city, the lives of these ladies intersect at all times. As most L&R fans, we've always wanted the two of them to be a couple but like most things in life, the lives of these ladies intersect with hiccups and things don't always happen the way they do. It's my favorite "will they-won't they" type of couple as you constantly root for them to be together but Maggie is happy with Ray, Hopey has settled down with a wife and kid; Love that spans beyond what are the confines of love.

Scott and Barda Free
Raised upon Apokolips to be destroyers of good an light by Darkseid, these 2 found love and freedom together escaping to Earth. Kirby gave us a strong, dedicated and devoted couple supportive and willing to overcome all obstacles in fighting for their love and independence. I was always excited for finding them in any comics whenever their own series were cancelled.

#3. Robert Crumb and Aline Kominsky-CrumbMake no mistake, while Robert Crumb has the superstar status, Aline Kominsky-Crumb is his equal at creating unflinchingly honest autobiographical comic books. Whether they write and draw solo stories about their relationship or collaborate on the same, they always confirm that, warts and all, this is an artistic and romantic match made in comic book heaven.

Counting down the top hits... 3. Kit Ryan and John Constantine. Let's just say that Kit is one of my all-time favorite funnybook characters. She's bold, she's strong, she's beautiful and she will only put up with so much shit. I'm pretty sure that Kit made my list of favorite Supporting Characters way back when in the hinterlands of Classic Christmas. She was, by far, the best thing to ever happen to John Constantine. And when his crap got a little too much for her and she left him, it sent him in to a spiral from which he barely recovered. Kit is a huge part of why I consider Ennis the quintessential Constantine writer. And he was able to make her shine in a story all her own, one that I really shouldn't have liked but I did. Constantine needed her to ground him and he's not been nearly as interesting a character since.

#3 - Superman and Lori LemarisThis is my favorite romance for our Kryptonian hero. This is the woman he truly fell in love with, and he showed tremendous introspection and maturity as he concluded that continuing on as Superman if she accepted his marriage proposal would always put her in danger. And he made that difficult choice and actually proposed, though Lori felt she could not accept due to their inherent differences even though she fully reciprocated his love. It also in my mind established more context why he did not feel like he could commit to Lois later on, and that he did not treat Lois' feelings casually, but had life experience already that made him feel he had to limit his personal life while still in the role as Superman.

3. Sugar and SpikeThese two toddlers were the stars of one of DC’s most consistently clever, imaginative and beautifully drawn and written titles over its 98-issue, 15-year run. Sheldon Mayer created a unique language for Sugar Plumm and Spike Wilson, the mischievous, adventurous kids who were joined at the hip as best friends forever. I wish I could say I’ve read a lot of Sugar and Spike stories, but I only came to it later in the run – 1968 or so – and I loved it. Mayer was a satirist, but a gentle one whose powers of observation kept his stories fresh. And his ear for language of all kinds made his dialogue stand out over most other comic writers’ and brought two toddlers and many other characters to vivid life. Now of course, these two kids displayed no real romantic attraction back then, but it was understood that that kind of attraction would develop eventually and that it would end happily. These two were meant for each other from the day they were born and their escapades were a refreshing breather from all the Sturm und Drang, not just in comics, but in the adult world, too. I’m sure the two have been ret-conned as serial killers by now, but that ain’t canon. They loved each other without realizing it from Day One and will until forever finally ends.

#3 Jon Sable & Myke BlackmonI don't really need to go in depth on this one; Mike Grell gives you all you really need.... If you need more, I'm in the middle of an entire review thread about the subject.Jon Sable is more than just an action/adventure series; it is a mature romance between two people, one of whom has suffered a series of tragedies that have hardened him, but there is still a soft center waiting to be tapped. Myke is a young artist who is first infuriated by Sable, then made curious, then falls in love. It isn't an easy path and Grell took his time, which made it all the sweeter, when it paid off.

3. Miyamoto Usgai and TomoeThese two have appeared before, so I won't talk about them too much. But their unexpressed longing, constrained by their conflicting sense of duty, is tragic, especially since they are so perfect together. I keep hoping Stan will give them both a happy ending, but I'm not sure it's that kind of a story, unfortunately. Form the classic #93, which served sadly as a sort of ending. But hopefully not forever.

3. Robin/Nightwing and Starfire (New Teen Titans)I am astounded that this is the first time this pairing has popped on anyone else's list. (...) Me, too. They didn't quite make the cut on my list, but I was starting to think that maybe I should have bumped another couple just so that they'd have a showing. I think they're just HIGH on alot of lists The ending is terrible, and was the worst of the Titans.. the 90s were not kind. Best to pretend it didn't happen (since he probably hasn't with all the reboots)

Bibgy Wolf and Snow White This was a bit of a weird relationship at the start... the 'will they or wont they' thing resolved with a mind controlled encounter, that somehow worked out. Both characters are great, and the melded really well together as Snow became the leader of Fabletown, and Bigby the strategist. Later in the series, their quiet moments at home were also quite fun in many cases with their diverse children.

3. Mr. Miracle and Big BardaI intended to offer up an off-the-wall choice today, rather than duplicating a choice that many have written about already, but on review, that pair of villains (who appeared in a single issue of BATMAN) didn't rise to praise-worthiness, so I'll keep my sequence of 4 pages of original art showing their origin all to myself and join in with the love for Kirby's Super Escape Artist and his warrior bride. I met Barda and Scott in issue 7 of MR. MIRACLE back in 1972. Every panel of that comic is seared into my memory, for example: I wasn't at all bothered by the then-radical notion of the female partner being the more physically powerful, although there was always the sense that the pair were equals with different, complimentary capabilities. I think that's a good model, and one I've held as the ideal for my own relationship. My wife's not a physical powerhouse like Barda, but she's a powerful personality with intelligence and talent that exceeds mine in many areas, and that's something I take joy in.
