I might put Perez on but not Cooke. I guess my main criterion (besides actually liking their work) is that the creator have wide-ranging output, and not be known for just one thing. I hate to pick on Perez, but Cooke's output feels more wide-ranging--even in his short career--than Perez' over 40+ years.

I hate to pick on Perez, but Cooke's output feels more wide-ranging--even in his short career--than Perez' over 40+ years. One thing that I think is absolutely in Cooke's favor is that he could do everything at a high level. That included lettering and coloring. In fact his coloring (when he did it himself) is one of my favorite things about his work.

Perez's art never did anything for me, but I couldn't find really anything to complain about it either. One thing, it seems, is he was really consistent from what I have seen over his career. His art never seemed to evolve. And that's not necessarily a bad thing. Just an observation.
Of the little I have seen of Cooke's art, his style isn't to my tastes. But then I have also not read anything he's done. Just seen scanned comic pages on the internet.
But as far as top ten, it would be a no for both.

George Perez — COIE was the first real exposure I had to his work, and I've been in love ever since. That he's able to draw more than one stock woman doesn't hurt, either.
Darwyn Cooke — Absolutely loved DC: The New Frontier. This is the story that made me an outspoken advocate of real time superhero comics. But still, not a top artist for me.

I've only read fill-in issues by Cooke. I'm never read a run of his. Perez is a fantastic artist, but I don't go out of my way to read a book just because he's penciling it.

Day Eleven Response and Wrap-Up
Wow, a day of really tough choices here! I want to put both in. George’s work was game changing for me, for a long time the only times I ever bought books just for the art were limited to Perez and Wrightson. Titans was my jam for several years, and Crisis is one of my most re-read tomes. And his current health is making me feel awful for probably having him just outside my top ten.
Cooke's New Frontier is on my Mount Rushmore of short contained series, and I love his art and covers everywhere. If life was more fair and he wasn’t taken from us much too soon, I’m sure there would be enough work to easily include him. But my stupid ‘save the best for last’ thinking still has Parker and much of his work in my backlog, so I’ll have to hold back for now.
My list so far: Frank Miller Jack Kirby Carl Barks Alan Moore Mike Mignola

This is totally a Trevor project but I see Mignola on the list and not Perez , Byrne or Adams. To each his own.

Day Twelve Choices
Ok, going modern again. Are either Jeff Lemire or Warren Ellis on your list?

Cei-U! I summon the gaping hole in my knowledge!

Lemire, I know nothing about. I liked Transmetropolitan and Planetary, but haven't read much else by Ellis. I saw him at a convention once and he told some amusing stories about upsetting Chris Claremont over the whole Kitty Pryde thing.

Day Eleven ChoicesToday we going back to a classic 2 piece after a couple of groups and we going to keep it to a couple of people who can really draw. Today I'm asking you… are Darwyn Cooke or George Perez in your top 10? Cooke: No. Haven't read anything in full and while I can see the talent when I come across online samples, his style doesn't always work for me.
Perez, another tentative No: if it were top ten superhero artists he'd be there for sure, but top ten comics creators in general, I'm pretty sure there will be too many others I'll want to include to leave space for Perez.

Lemire: Black Hammer was a big disappointment, and that's all I've read, so no. Too new, anyway.
Ellis: I think all I've read it Hellblazer, liked it, but it's not enough to make the top 10.
